We don't have a lot of online BLM documents for NC, but there are some referencing the National Seashore on the east end and Cherokee lands on the west end along with some scattered odds and ends in the middle. Just messin' around, I found this plat:?ÿ https://glorecords.blm.gov/details/survey/default.aspx?dm_id=71795&sid=mbiirhx2.too#surveyDetailsTabIndex=1?ÿ (It's too big to copy and paste.)

It shows part of the boundary between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Cherokee Land. Down in the lower right (Southeast to you pros) corner is a geographic position in NAD 27. To me, that's like finding gold.

Even though it's the wrong ellipsoid and datum, punching those coordinates into the NGS interactive map gives this nice picture:

It's pretty easy to see that the plat and the interactive map are in sync. Down at the intersection of the parkway and Soco Road is a blank circle representing NGS marker FB1570 and it turns out to be a really cool one with pictures and everything. Here are two of the pictures:

?ÿ

The data sheet says that the monument was set at an unknown date by BLM and then "recovered" in 1938.

In the Northwest corner of the plat is reference to a USGS monument, Bunches Bald, 1928. Its NAD 27 coordinates, from the survey notes, are 35-29-44.16N, 83-09-23.70W.?ÿ

According to the highway sign, FB1570 is the initial point of an 1876 survey. Some 144 years pass, conscientious folks maintain records and I find this messing around with my computer.

I'm not sure that I can find the electric bill that I need to pay this week. Amazing.

@mathteacher

I recently tied one of my cell tower surveys to that monument.

@flga-2

Apparently, Keith's last post was 8 years ago, before my time. I do see something about "curved lines" and some political stuff in the old posts, but fill me in on the connection.

Good find!?ÿ I love finding old monuments.

?ÿ

I'm curious to know what the 2 arrows pointing to the NW and SW are for??ÿ Pointing towards the next angle points in the boundary?

@notsomuch

I really don't know. The first two monuments pictured to the Southwest on the interactive map are old TVA marks that apparently have been destroyed. From reading the field notes, the surveyed line is well marked now, and I didn't see any reference to Southwest, but my attention to detail has been lagging lately.

In these crazy times, the letters "BLM" have a new (political) connotation.?ÿ I feel bad for those who work at the Bureau of Land Management and use those initials around regular people who don't know the agency, but follow the news.?ÿ My mind was in a different place when I clicked on this - I was thinking "Oh good Lord, this might get ugly".?ÿ
