> Conrad,
> Do you wear a seat belt every time that you get in a care? Of course you do. Do you wear it because you plan on getting into an accident? Of course not. Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home or vehicle? Of course you do. Do you plan on your home or vehicle catching on fire? Of course not. You wear your seat belt and have a fire extinguisher because you are an intelligent and responsible person that has decided to take responsibility for your own personal safety. Carrying a firearm is the same thing. Those of use that choose to carry a firearm are simply taking responsibility for our own safety.

> I hope that your post was not a troll post and this helped you to understand. Take care.
I don't live anywhere in the US so I'm trying to get a handle on what it's like over there.
I've asked simple questions and gotten rhetorical questions as answers. I'm starting to build a picture of something, but regarding the actual questions I've asked, well I'm still none the wiser.
The list of contingencies you could plan for is potentially in-exhaustive, that's why drawing potentially false equivalences between car accidents and small fires, and potentially shooting another human is not helping me understand anything.
It probably says something about the state of the debate over there that you could even begin to think my post could be a troll. A poster says he doesn't like being afraid, so it seems reasonable to try and find out what is making him afraid enough to carry a gun most everywhere.
It's hard to tell, but I bet it puts a lot of 230 grain hollow points down range if someone has to find out!
I got the same thing
Conrad,
It is just so tempting to go all Fruedian on them, but keep in mind that the freedom loving gun manufacturers of America have to keep selling guns to stay in business so, corporate necessity and marketing skills being what they are, we just have to keep buying and displaying guns.
Really, isn't that what makes us, as Americans, so proud and free?
To be so frightened that we can't walk down the street without a weapon.
Don
Conrad,
I am but a sheep dog. I seem docile and happy as they come as long as I am fed, sheltered, my flock is safe, and I run free. I am not scared, but I am always vigilant. Don't try to take my food, enter my house or car without my invite, attempt harm on my family, or restrict my freedom and you'll never know why the wolves are scared of me!

Hello Don,
I'm trying to find out what the reality of working an average street in America is like.
Conrad
I can't speak for everyone else here, but I can tell you how I feel.
I do not keep a firearm handy out of fear. I keep a firearm in the vehicle to protect myself, if the need arises.
I work in some very unpopulated areas. There are feral hogs making a mess of the woods and can make a mess of a human being if you happen on to them.
There are plenty of lawless clandestine enterprises in the woods. Some make methamphetamine, some make illegal liquor, some strip stolen cars and sell the parts. Some would love to take my $50K worth of GPS equipment and toss me in a hole.
I have been shot at while surveying a number of times. I have only returned fire once..just to let the other guy know we had a gun, too. He stopped shooting.
I carry for protection, not out of fear. B-)
Conrad we carry because we can . It's our right as red blooded Americans . Plus we may run into a bear .or wild boar..zombie

I'm sorry Kevin, I understand the metaphor, but was it meant to help answer any of my questions?
Scary as hell, Wild West.

Thanks for the straight answer paden.

I would probably want to carry a gun if I was a fair chance to encounter any of those too.

It's safe, Conrad. Really.
Don
Same situation, same story. Pen flare with flares and bear bangers. Lotsa bears, and bear bangers are light and easy. Certainly lighter than carrying a shotgun around.
I remember jobs where we were required to carry a shotgun around. Dumped out of the chopper with a total station, legs, rod, a pair of chainsaws and fuel, axes etcetera.
We ditched the shotgun 10 feet from the heli-pad.
Oddly enough in gun friendly 'merica, pen flares are totally illegal, as is Canadian strength bear spray.
He fled with his flank in flames.
I can picture Daffy Duck saying that.
😛
Don
We do have zombies , but they usually don't wake until after 12 noon .
I don't, even though I have an enhanced concealed carry permit. I was asked one time by a deputy sheriff, "are you carrying?" while on a job in the rural part of a nearby county. He said that I needed to because of the wild hogs in the area!
I get the "big eyes" when they see my Blackie Collins 22" machete. And I am a big ol' six-foot guy -scruffy lookin' at 250 pounds with a scowl.
If that don't work, I use my southern gentleman demeanor.B-)
I only cary in remote areas or really bad neighborhoods. I have a CC permit and my favorate conceal carry weapon is a Ruger LC9 with factory laser.
Me. "What's the difference?"
T.C. Carroll "It's the difference between right and wrong!"
Come to where I work, there are zombies who are up and about by 8 am o.O
