I had always thought these were cool, no one ever knew what they are, but now the truth comes out. 

They aren't knitting devices, they aren't religious relics:

They are surveying instruments!!!

I knew it!!!!

There was always something that made them seem awesome. 

Imagine a surveying instrument that helped Romans lay out all the British construction they did in such a short time. 

AI analyzed them and came to the conclusion that they are used as a type of handheld surveying instrument. AI can't be wrong.

Just how it works,,,,,,, well that's still up in the air, but I still want one. I do think an original is a bit expensive, more than any instrument I've ever purchased. 

I once checked into getting one and it was only $50 or something, then I researched it a bit and those are 3d printed, the originals aren't for sell apparently. 

 

The original manufacturer went out of business some years ago. I think there was a hostile takeover and the company assets were sold off.

Those used to appear from time to time shooting out of the grain auger on the combine dumping the crop into a trailer.  We could do an internal inspection of the combine but never found where they were installed and how they snapped off.  Must not have been critical as the combine kept runnning fine.

I would love to see how in the heck they were constructed, seems impossible for the technology at the time. I guess it's a mold, the bronze gets poured in and then you have this thing. 

Apparently few people know the Romans were the original inventors of the Magic 8-ball. 

It was also handy for beaning your Rod man/slave with when he was lolly-gagging online or focused on his clay tablet….
