"ONE MAN" dog and pony show goes out with 2 man field crew to meet with new client and get everybody organized and heading in the right direction. Hangs around with Party to start measuring down county road looking for pin in center. First thing that sets "ONE MAN" off is no Keel or pouch to carry stuff in using their pockets. Then using fancy Geometrically engineered roller we measure down the asphalt County Road. No way to mark the first location due to lack of Keel. Search for pin. Not found, now we need an extra 57 feet to search for the next one. Party Chief says "Lets STEP IT OFF". "ONE MAN" loses it! Went off like a true Dutchman! Got One Hundred Thousand Dollars worth of equipment! People Pay Us to be Professionals and we Charge for it! And we are going to STEP IT OFF! Party Chief says he is not going to take such Verbal Abuse and quits. OK fine I'll drive you back to the Office! I drive him back (40 minutes) and say "Thanks for your Help". Then I check his time card and he included the drive home. Who's the horses butt?

Sounds like some conversations I have had with myself. Solo can be so lonely sometimes.

Most Professionals Surveyors can step off 57 feet to look for a corner. I have chewed out a few guys ,but never because they wanted to step off a distance to look for a corner that is what we do every day. I would also pay him for the hour drive home its just not worth it to argue with him over an hour pay.

True professionals (or adults for that matter) don't "go off like a true Dutchman". Which do you think appeared more unprofessional to the client or other potential clients (who most likely know very little about surveying) a man pacing off 57', or the company owner out in the road yelling and screaming like a jack ape? Anger management is a skill that is essential if you are going to have employees. Just my opinion, but you asked for it.

I don't consider blowing up like that to be all too professional either. I never really responded to that type of "mentoring". Then again I have no idea what the PC is like and maybe he just doesn't care.

Wow, I can't say that I have $100K in equipment but I'm pretty well stocked with two total stations and three gps units, and I still PACE OFF EVERY JOB! When scouting for corners I'm not going to pretend to even know where to measure precisely from , so I pace.

The fact that "One Man" felt like he needed to go out and supervise "2 man field crew" to search for a pin in the road kind of sets the whole thing up.

I wouldn't put up with your abuse either. You owe him for his time and then some, in my opinion.

WOW! That's why I hate and don't try to survey with my wife! Some people just can't get their minds in the game. Just last week had 3 men with me doing stakeouts. They had a wheel, a tape, my pocket rod, a laser distance meter, and my prism pole with me setup. Then they could have stepped off close enough to give me a shot to correct from. What tool do you think they used? It was a site to watch each and every time we staked a point. With me 400 or so feet away. I'm just glad a "One Man" wasn't there. Reminds me of working with Dad when I was growing up.

I pace stuff off all the time with a hundred grand in gear parked in the truck while doing recon for low hanging fruit. It's all about taking some time to develop a feel for the job. Once I have a feel and a plan I'll break out the big guns. Had my fill of screamers over the years. A true professional always keeps his cool.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

If you can pace it for stake out, you can pace it for recon.
Having the ability to find enough monuments to get started, by simply reading a map and pacing is a very good quality (in my opinion).
Knowing when to move on to plan B is also important.

I have had jobs where I was simply lost and could not get started. Those days are frustrating. Smartphones and GPS have almost eliminated that.

Now if "the rest of the story" was that this same guy was continually un-prepared and was always impeding the work....and this was the last straw..that would be another story.

I pace all the time. That's how I find most of my corners. Pacing and pin finder.

On long ones I break out the old hipchain. Now that is something a surveyor shouldn't be without. A hipchain.

How hard is it to add 57 to whatever number was on the wheel odometer? Then just roll down to that number.

This doesn't seem to be rocket science to me.

I bet there are many here that have never used a hip chain.
I used to help my dad doing recon in the woods (looking for old GLO corners) using a hip chain and compass.

A hand full of names come to mind from that little bit of info that need a season or two of charm school rehab.......

They make a point of singling others out that do not follow their request to the "t".

When ask for a copy of something, whatever you bring them as a copy of the document, if is is not exactly the way they would have done it, it is trash and not fit for their eyes or worthy to be placed in their files, no matter that it was perfectly sufficient for the purpose intended.

The only thing I have to say to those people......"Do it yourself", "I don't do drama", "you are too needy dude"...........

I do enjoy watching them swell up in belief that their fit is really going to change things........B-)

He titled the thread "Need and Opinion".

I see his need for anger management, and he certainly got opinions ...
