I am new to Total Station. I own a standard reflector less Hilti Total Station, its main use is for doing building layouts. I want to use it for layout and anchor bolt placement. I can layout my building and anchor points on CAD and download them to my station. From this point I don't know exactly where to start. If I take this to the job and set the station anywhere, what is the first point I need to set and how do I set it? What is the second point I need to set? After setting Two points I believe I should be able to set all other points?

Thanks to anybody that can help.
Also I'm looking for field training in Michigan

Aloha, Conrad: Welcome to the forum. I am not a expert...try searching the site. I recall seeing question similar to yours. You might consider investing in a book by Wesley G. Crawford--Construction Surveying and Layout. Great book to have!

I hope some of the experts here will help you out. Aloha

If I'm reading this right it sounds like you are saying you can layout the building except you don't know exactly where on the site the building goes.

You need the construction surveyor to set enough key points so that you know where the building goes and you have extras for checks.

The question isn't a difficult one to answer, the answer will be difficult for you to understand.

It's like Dave replied, you have to know where the building is to be located upon the site before you can set the first point, and there should already be some form of control points in the ground before that can happen.

Your question is akin to someone asking what the first step in performing surgery should be, in my opinion.
