The first stage of a nice pair of boots....
I have a photograph similar to that in the OP that my Dad took in Columbia circa 1948. There are 14 men standing side by side holding it and the snake is longer than that. They shot it out of a tree because it was showing interest in their instrument man...

I'll have to show you the pictures of my father's "pet" gator some time.?ÿ He could call him (her?) up on the bank to be fed.?ÿ When the gator got up to about 8 feet long my mother pretty much demanded that Daddy get rid of him.?ÿ Daddy called the Department of Natural Resources and they said they would come trap the gator.?ÿ Daddy said, "You don't have to trap him, I'll call him up for you".?ÿ And he did.
Another farmer a little further south wanted a gator for his pond to get rid of the snakes so they moved him down there.

Many years ago driving a rental car from New Orleans to Baton Rouge was my first experience with seeing gators sunning themselves on the highway shoulders.?ÿ Thought about what I would do if I had a flat tire.?ÿ Decided I could live in the rental car until someone came to tow it off the highway.
