As many firms may do in Q4 each year when business has been good we have purchased a few things, nothing big, nothing bleeding edge really, but hopefully will contribute to safety, reliability and speed in the field.
1) Standardized control markers to 2" rebar caps marked with company name and control to avoid having five versions with LS numbers. Also nail and washer for hard surface control will be the exception, the new marker is the 1" brass plugs installed flush with surface using a countersink bit.
2) Marking paint will now be via http://www.spraysmart.com/
3) Software maintenance paid on a few packages
4) Instrument power upgrade to http://www.gpac-llc.com/pps.php with upgrade to LiFEPO batteries
5) Upgrade RT modems to overcome the 2G sunset by AT&T and soon T-Mobile
6) http://www.intuicom.com/gps-gnss-products/rtk-bridge-x 4GLTE model has 700 Mhz cell spectrum, adds much larger cell footprint especially in rural areas, this is our 2nd bridge, will be able to run two bridges for base/rover work in addition to the other features.
7) Retired old sateliite phone and repalced with http://www.inmarsat.com/service/isathub/ This is for emergency comms in remote areas and transfering updated project plans when needed. Only works while stationary, BUT I am also considering RTN corrections as a possible use when inside a network but outside of cell coverage. I think I have resolved how to do this, would require adding a wifi->ethernet converter.
Nothing BIG replaced, just a bunch of small items that hopefully will make life easier in the field. Kind of looking forward to field season to crank up and try some of these. Total station, level, GNSS all remains the same...
What did Santa bring you?

First and Second editions of Brown, BC&LP. Just ordered the third from eBay ($15). I already have the fourth, bought new in the late 1990s. I'll defer 5, 6, & 7, too expensive.
I bought the office two boxes of red pencils, a bag of rubber bands and a new pair of scissors.
It's been a good year, but even though money gets put away each month for taxes, it always seems to be a little bit short when it comes time to pay the piper.

I think the company bought a new box springs and mattress along with some various bedroom furniture, lamps and a not-too-gaudy oil painting. This was necessary equipment. If I can't get a good night's sleep I can't survey correctly.
CEUs

Association Dues
Property taxes
New batteries for PM3s, Two Way Radios, Allegro GX and Phones
Don't forget to to get your annual supply of stamps at the Post Office. Forevers, of course.
If it's due, pay it, even if it doesn't require payment for a while. Our property taxes come due about December 20 with an option of only paying half and delaying the other half for about five months. I always pay mine completely in December.
General maintenance on the fleet of chariots. Be sure to fill them up while you're at it. $50 here and $50 there soon adds up to real money.
DO NOT waste money on things you really don't have to have because you think that will reduce your taxes. Expensive toys that don't really do anything for you fit n this category.

Seed corn, soybean seed, fertilizer, chemicals, spreading, spraying, should cover all of next year's expenses on the farm side.
Phantom 4 Pro drone, truck running boards on the surveying side.

Can just image a nail or prism pole or plumb bob puncturing a hole those paint bags, and it goes all the inside of the truck bed.
Renewed license. Danner boots. Renewed ExpertGPS support.
I have never bought a new truck. One of the field trucks was on it's last leg so I bit the bullet. I hope this one lasts 20 years or more like the other.

I got the chance to check out the showroom in San Jose. Pretty cool.

SWMBO won't let me near the showroom because she knows I'll come back with one and thus bankrupt the household. 😉
