I've been asked to do a boundary survey with topography, elevations, contours, and vegetation in one of those high-end subdivisions where our betters live. The HOA design guidelines (read, rigidly enforced rules) are 106 pages.
And I have to take the elevations with a transit (says so in the rules).
Geez.
The reply I would like to make to the HOA would get me banned from the board. So I will refrain.
Have fun.B-)
I had a contractor swing through where I was working the other day, "Hey Bub, whatcha doing out here?", he said. "I'm just doing a little survey on this lot over here," says I.
"Yup, I saw your transom back there," says he.....
I'm pretty sure that my transom is still on the stern of my boat, but nevermind....or maybe he was talking about that window that is horizontal over the doorway? LOL
well it was my GPS gathering some static data for a north determination that he saw, on a lot where the owners are requiring due East/West orientation.
A total station is a combination of a transit with an EDM and electronics for either onboard data collection or an external data collector. I don't see a problem!

Ha ha. Yeah, I would like to see the faces of the HOA board when the licensing board tells them that dictating the methodology and equipment required to perform surveying falls under the definition of the practice and they are now practicing illegally. And I would ask the counsel for the HOA for a copy of statute or case law which allows the HOA to supercede state authority.
Have fun with this one Bruce
Just chuckle at that sort of stuff. I had one that said I had to prepare a drainage plan...they think a drainage plan consists of drawing arrows showing flow away from the house...
Print out stickers that read TRANSIT and put them on all of your equipment.
That's not a GPS, can't you read? It's a transit.
From my dealings with HOAs, they don't know the difference between a transit and a bucket of rock.
I always ask for them to fill out a work order detailing what they want and then I have to sit down and translate somewhat to match any of my skills as a surveyor.
What they get is usually what they need, even though it is not what they think they ask for.
😉
Make sure you have the proper attire also.
I would judge the angle of that hat as "jaunty."
I only mention that because some here have wondered about when the angle of a hat becomes jaunty.
Don
Edit: those boots seem pretty jaunty also.
In all seriousness though, that looks like a real (and a good) I-man; his setup, his stance and the position of his hands all indicate an experienced hand. From his day to mine the standards of craftmanship remained the same.
Then everything went to hell:-)
Don
And if he is sighting down the chaining line...NOT a BeerLeg!

The US won the cold war and defeated communism only to have it spread through every community across the country in the form of HOA's. I despise HOA's.
