The group I am going to Ecuador with, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) has a donated total station and data collector. According to them it is a TS15 and a CS15. I am not at all familiar with Leica total stations and data collectors. So, a couple of questions...

I use Trimble access. It has a Leica instrument type, but not the TS15. They are TC300, TC500, TC800...up to TC2000 (all TC). Will the TS15 work with a Trimble DC running access or survey controller?

Or can it be set up manually in the survey style?

If not, how difficult is the Leica CS15/TS15 to learn? I will want to do basic stuff, nothing too complicated. However, I have seen on this board that Leica software may not be the easiest to use?

easy. download and read the manual and you'll be fine. play with it, press every button and drill down into every menu to see what it's all about. take the right attitude into the process and you'll do fine.

However, I have seen on this board that Leica software may not be the easiest to use?

we have a very primitive human working for us. he has no problem with the software. if someone has trouble using the software then something has gone wrong. and it won't be the software.

OK, problem is right now I don't have hands on the equipment, but the donor has said they will do a class for everyone (I am the only surveyor on the trip).

John,
On the Leica end you will most likely need the GeoComm feature activated. The instrument does not already have it you at looking at around $1000 to get it.

Thanks, Conrad. I have been around a while, should be able to figure it out. But anything like that helps, of course.

It's possible to connect to the newer ones but you won't get full two-way functionality. If it's possible to get the instrument to output the old GSM (?) format it should work. It's been a few years since I've tried it.

At one point a had a cs15 pc simulator. Sorry cant find it to upload. Maybe try an internet search for one. Im sure Leica my world is where i got mine. You can play with some of the menus. and if i remember right you can simulate a traverse by entering angles and distances by the user.

I think you will be fine. just get all your settings right. There is a setup wizard. And this is key (function then config) every app has config options to get there its function button (hard button) then on the screen config (soft button).

Leica has simulators for both the Viva (what will be on the CS15) and Captivate that can be run on your computer. I'm sure if you call your local Leica rep and explain what you have going and what you'll be using it for they'll help you get the software install & the license for it.

I use mine all the time. It's a very handy tool to have available.

@johnymal?ÿ

It might, depending on which total station, however you won't know until you try your specific combination, and there will be no support from Leica or Trimble. I don't think anyone here is going to be able to give you a very specific answer unless they personally used one combination, but one software update could potentially cause it to not work anymore, so certain versions could work while others might not.

In my case the 1203+ robot seemed to work manually (not tested extensively because I need robotic working) and the 1200 instructions were included in the 1100 section of the manual, however nothing newer than that was listed (at least as far as robotics go - I don't know all of the other models listed in the instructions.

We apparently have a crew at our other office that's using an older Trimble access on a tsc3 with a Leica TCR800 series. I haven't used it personally or seen it myself so no guarantees.?ÿ

For the PC simulators TS15 and CS15, take a look an register on Leica MyWorld for download.

I can download the simulators on Leica MyWorld > MyDownloads > TPS Products > TS15 > Tools > SmartWorkx Viva TS15 and CS15 PC simulator

What's on the CS15??ÿ Is it Smartworx??ÿ It's pretty basic software, as I remember, haven't used it in many years, though.?ÿ

I remember that we had to pay extra to get the traverse module unlocked.?ÿ Without that, I believe that we were limited to just single angles, basically sideshots and topo.

Like a lot of Leica products, it was a little awkward, not very intuitive.?ÿ

That said, I think you should be able to connect to your DC with Access, bluetooth or with a cable, if you happen to have a Leica cable

The CS15 runs Viva which for all practical purposes is Smartworks with a facelift. While Smartworks does not hold your hand as you work, it is very powerful once you get over the learning curve.?ÿ The new interface made it a little easier to figure out how to get things done.?ÿ

And as pointed out on many posts, you are not going to be able to run a Leica instrument on a non-Leica DC without the instrument having a GeoCom license.?ÿ

@john-putnam?ÿ

I think we're talking the same thing, it's called Leica Smartworx Viva, for both GPS and total stations.

I guess I wasn't aware of the GeoCom license when I worked where we used the Leica's with Access.
