Any idea of what happens to the servo motor when I interrupt an ongoing rotation and manually rotate and point it to some other location? Thank you.

Are you physically grabbing the instrument while its rotating??ÿ Because this could cause damage over time.?ÿ If you press "stop" and then move it, no issue.?ÿ

@eric-kara

That's actually what I am doing. What I am not sure of is on how the system really works. In auto-aiming mode, I first rough aim the gun to the target and let TS finds the reflector. In this case, I don't have full confidence if I am interrupting or hurting the servo motor in the process as it turns out to be partially automatic. If it can be done that way, I suspect that it can also be done in outer routines like power search. This can protect the motor in any accidental disturbance. I don't know. A robotic novice here. Getting tips or advice from you guys would help me gain the expertise much faster. I just wish to learn the best practices as fast as I can. Thank you.

@amdomag

I'd suspect you are damaging the system, if the servo is rotating the instrument and you turn it the opposite direction, you are applying pressure to the internal parts creating the rotation, creating some form of wear to them.

You have got two settings - "automatic aiming" and "with lock".

When the telescope is moving by itself probably best not to try and stop it. You won't win!

Switch lock off or wait for it to stop searching.

When it's not locked or searching its fine.

To put things in perspective, this is a broken servo from an 1100 series Leica (with a USB plug for scale). That plastic gear is 2.06mm thick. When you stop your instrument by hand, that's what you are fighting against.

If your servo ever decides that it wants to give you a run for your money as far as strength is concerned, that gear will probably be the first to break.

I do not how familiar you are with the inside of a Total Station, but those gears aren't the easiest to get at.

And. no offense, but someone who needs to ask a question like that probably isn't the right person to try changing one of those gears at home.

Let the instrument stop turning on it's own, or stop the process by cancelling it.

Again, I mean no offense.
