Well, back many years ago, when I got my first GPS receivers, they were LOCUS L-1 only. Post processed. Static.
I got going, learned the software, and loved them. I barely slept, for the first week. Here was all this Satellite data, hitting the earth, and GOING TO WASTE! And I was not out there to collect it! I was so stoked. I had traversed MANY miles, with transit, and tape, and then EDM, and total station. Being able to get shots, without chopping all that line, and all that work... was awesome!
They were set up, at 10" rate. Every 10 seconds, it stored a slice of GPS data. I think my longest observation was 36 hrs. In a bad spot.
I established how it worked, (from a user point of view) and how to get good data. Awesome!
Then, we moved up, to RTK.
Once again, life changed. It was MORE robust. You could get a FIX in the woods, (albeit they had to be checked). But, they were great. They worked at the 1 HZ rate. Awesome. Once again, I could not sleep. Good GPS data was a wasting! Not only that, but generally, the GPS data was cleaner at night! Ha!
The other day, I went to set a corner. I had gotten an update in my Javad LS, and had NOT rebooted it, so it apparently had not taken full effect. So, it ran at 1 hz for a few hrs. What a come down! Took me over an hour, to set a corner!
Got tech support, and rebooted it. (Their advice) 5 hz was BACK! :-D:-D
I got a days work done, in 1-1/2 hrs. COOL.
Then, I began thinking. I started at a 10 second rate. Locus.
Then, went to a 1 second rate. Legacy E
Now, I want 5 hz. 5 shots per second. Coming through the radio. Real time!
I can sleep better now. LESS data is wasting.
If you set your units to do rtk at the 1 shot every 5 seconds, and compared that to one shot per second, you would see that the 1 second rate is MUCH better.
The same, with 5 hz. 5 per second. You never want to go back, to one shot per second.
GPS that does not use 5hz, is wasting good GPS data, all over the ground! (sniff:-()
I was out on this job, and I could not get a pic. Because in beast mode, it had run through the verify process, and shot 90 epochs, and was done, before I could get my camera out, and get a pic. Down on this creek, it took longer. Sats were not in good config. Took maybe 2 mins to go through the process. It's a bit of an Irish lass, to figure out how to run, but, there is nothing like it, when she does!
Keep warm out there.
Nate
I've followed a path much like yours, but unlike you, have not made much productive use out of my investments (both time and money) in GNSS equipment. I've done some testing in the woods with the equipment I now have and find generally that if you're in the woods, the solution may not be reliable. Yes, I know that by testing and verifying, it is possible to do work in the woods. But, even with testing and verifying, I think the quality of a total station measurement to a point in the woods is likely to be an order of magnitude more accurate than a measurement made using GNSS equipment.
Javad's advertisements, and the many testimonials, like yours, from land surveyors doing work with Javad equipment, make me think that perhaps the time has come to make yet another investment. Maybe this time, the ROI will be satisfactory. I know that the LS is a great piece of equipment, and at $12,990 a great value as well compared to other products in the marketplace. Still, that's $13K, and a considerable investment.
Great to read about your experiences, Nate. Enjoy your new toy!

If you want the performance, you would have to spend 20-21k.
I thought I could buy one cheap, (13k or so) as they were that way, 2 yrs ago, or so. There was a scammer, on ebay, offering them for 9k for the LS. So, I did not realize the price had gone up. Tiger something in Florida.

Nate
Is it possible to contact you. I have some questions about the Javad unit and would like to talk to someone who is actually using it.
Thanks

"an order of magnitude" I had to Google that one! That would be "about ten times different in quantity"
So, a bit of context can go with that. If you can stand a tenth of error, occasionally, in the woods, you will like this. (Often it's better than that, but you just have to know about what level of accuracy you need) Not gonna spend 10 minutes, refining a fencepost shot... a tenth is good.
Having worked in rural Arkansas, all my life, and having spent my soul, searching for 100% closure, on all traverses, (ie, we don't do adjust, because we closed flat...) I can say that pretty well any boundary point is going to be within a tenth of a foot, of it's 100% perfect position. I have now had this unit long enough to retrace myself, and since, I had good procedure, with the older unit, (multiple observations, over a period of time) My accuracy is up just a little, over multiple averaged rtk shots, with single engine "fix 'n go" procedures. BUT, it happens very fast now. When this unit says accuracy box is 0.16' square, and your verify is on, with resets, with all, then, you are probably within 0.12'. Usually, for a woods shot that says that, I re-do it in a few minutes. The point is, that it can process it so fast, that you have TIME to do 3 shots, or 5 shots. And average them. You can really SEE what is going on. You can narrow down the accuracy box, in a short time.
In some real bad thickets, you might shoot a point 100 times, and find all the shots agree within 0.15'. BUT with the poorer ones, you are given some warning, with a larger accuracy box. I have not done this. But, as a part of the research and development, this is a part of things..... Try this setting, and let it cook all night, automatically going through it's process, and storing, and re starting.
The speed with which this works, compensates. It's fast enough, to have some serious confidence.
I am SEEING RTK monkeys who get ONE fixed shot, and boogie to the next point. 3' errors are common. You won't get this, if you have not turned off the verify.
I don't know of anyone that has used the "beast mode" of true 5hz and then wanted to go back to 1hz. I don't know why Javad doesn't call this their "normal" mode.
Fixed/Float is so 1994.
That was a productive comment. I am very impressed.
Mr Survey AK, have you seen the Javad LS run, in the woods, or in the field?
This is a simple YES or NO.
