Has anyone ever tried any of the insect repellent clothing? I??ve always taken the standard precautions against ticks and red bugs. I was just wondering if any of this stuff was worth trying.?ÿ
Depends.
the clothing is "doped"/dosed with permethrin, and depends on how many times you wash them and general longevity.
you can dope/dose your own with a spray bottle of the same and not need to purchase specific clothing brands that sell the predosed items.?ÿ
it works. it doesn't repel them it's an insecticide and kills them outright?ÿ
limit for exposure depends on the individual, and that's like everything else in the products used.
If you have cats, you need to be very cautious with it, as they are quite susceptible to poisoning by it. It is used in dog flea collars but even they could get an overdose.
I had a reaction to the solution.?ÿ I'll stick to skin-so-soft and Vicks Vapor Rub to keep the insects away.
I use a very tight fitting, thin bug suit that goes on first, like long under ware. No chemicals. Its very effective until to hot to wear.
I have used a shirt from Canada called the bug shirt. When the bugs are thick enough to interfere with breathing it works well. It is treated with permethrin and has a well designed hood. When working in tick area's I soak all clothing in a permethrin solution, and have not noticed any reaction (rash or allergy). $20 for a quart of 10% solution that is diluted further when soaking clothing. I have worked UXO jobs with ex military crews in heavy tick areas, and they are cautious of permethrin use and try to avoid it. They dress well (tall boots, gaiters, wrist cuffs, hats) and do a thorough post field inspection.
As others have mentioned permethrin is a potent insecticide and should be used properly. I found the instructions clear.
I used permethrin often in the Outer Banks and on the currituck peninsula.?ÿ One day, I counted over a dozen dead on my pants, flicked off at least a dozen not quite dead over the course of the day, and picked off another dozen or so that somehow got into the pants tucked into boots as soon as I got to the office.?ÿ Almost quit that day.?ÿ Would've taken a bug suit and more to get me to deal with that every day.?ÿ I applied the permethrin to clothing every day, and still had ticks get through to skin.?ÿ Have to be vigilant.?ÿ Pay attention to that crawly feeling itch...?ÿ Stay safe out there!

They gave us that stuff to drink when I was in the USMC lol. I am fine. ?ÿJust kidding but before deploying and or field exercises I used that stuff all over my uniform. ?ÿAnd always soaked in a good tub with Avon skin so soft. We use to use avon skin so soft on the horses to keep horse flies off. ?ÿNo use of smell goods in soaps or deodorant when working in the field will help a lot. ?ÿBeing from Mississippi we have our mosquito??s and mayflies registered with the FAA they are huge and move fast. ?ÿWhen they hit you its like a baseball bat slapping you. ?ÿThe perma stuff is great for the ticks and chiggers. Nothing in the world worse than getting bit by chiggers on you do-jigger 🙂 makes for a not so fun time. ?ÿ
I dunno, but I'm pretty sure that I have some "chick" repellent cloths in my closet ?????ÿ
If they??re like mine the older they get the better they work. ?ÿMight help if I used some skin so soft.
there's two kinds of people in this world...
those that have been bit by chiggers....

and those that will be bitten by chiggers..
