Drive a aluminum u-channel about a foot from the point but don't bury the barbs. Strap a golf umbrella to it. Makes a nice shelter for the instrument and a place for me to write notes. I need a plastic box or toolbox for a dry place to put my notes and a towel to wipe my hands. A half-size clipboard will fit inside the S6 case.

What would you say to a backpack with an umbrella fixed to it?

That would be cool but wouldn't work well when we are on foot. There's too much brush and dead fall and just general stuff in the way. The primary purpose of the umbrella is to keep the instrument reasonably dry and I can get under there and write notes.

On foot I carry the umbrella and post in one hand. The S6 box is a backpack although it lacks pockets. I might go back to using the SECO backpack although it's nice not having it take up space in the truck.

POTS

POTS, P*** on that S***,I'm staying inside. Nopey, nopey. Ain't gonna happen.

Once you get used to living on beanie weenies and crackers, you stop doing foolish things like working in a wet suit under an umbrella.

How does the S6 do riding on its side? I've been told that some instruments (the Leica DNA03, for example) don't tolerate the bumps and jolts of transport when on their sides, tending to go out of calibration easily in that circumstance.

(The DNA03 case handle is up when the instrument is on its side, so it's easy to make this mistake.)

The umbrella would be removable; you carry the umbrella now, open, while tripping throught brush?

No, I fold it when in the brush. On the road (no wind) I just left it open.

It doesn't seem to mind.

Normally in the truck it is standing up. This is just on the ATV.

Is the DNA03 a level? Those definitely need to be stored up. At a previous job I found an old NI2; unfortunately the box was on its side for years (no one was using it). Never could get it to peg. We have an NI2 that is a beautiful instrument and has been stored properly.

I sit atop my horse and laugh heartily from the land of Oregon at the man with the umbrella.
