I was watching a program regarding small time Alaskan gold miners this weekend. During this episode some kid is marking out his property line with a handheld. The producer is doing the voice over telling us how accurate this is and how he can put mark out the line to the gnats butt all the while this kid is saying that he better stay 100 feet or better from the line because the unit is only good to 30-60 feet. How come some high school kid can figure this stuff out but most people I run across can't?
Because his Grandfather who was running this mine before him told him so. I cringed as welll when watching that episode. He knows there would be more to lose if he encroached off his property versus the return on gold he was finding in that area.
I don't think they can do anything right on that show!!
Interesting...I was called by the producers of the show to appear on it to talk about surveying and mining claims which I was happy to do but then they balked a couple weeks later when they found out I was a Nevada Licensed surveyor and not an Alaskan licensed surveyor even though most of my surveying work is in Alaska.
I love this show.
Not that you could not have pointed them at an Alaska Surveyor who would have then told them to talk to you.
😉
Maybe you could barge into one of their programs screaming that your hand held puts the line right through the middle of their claim!
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. Typing class 9th grade!

Love the show. I thought the scene you're referencing included a shot of the kid pointing out a mining claim tag marking the claim limits, which he found using his handheld GPS's rough location.
Sort of like we do.
I watch it so I can feel better about myself.
Yeah, not sure I'm talking about the same episode, but remember the kid used the handheld GPS to find a tree or a post that was marked.
