The last I heard, Tennessee had approximately 1100-1200 licensed surveyors. I do not know the breakdown of how many are active, in-state, and out of state.
I do not know the breakdown of the other 4 states I am licensed in either.

I believe you will find a tremendous difference between the number of license holders in a State and the number of resident surveyors actually pursuing land surveying work anywhere close to a full time basis. Referring to them as active is a misnomer for a significant percentage.
That's a very good point. There are 12 licensed PS's in the county that my office is located in, but there is only 2 of us currently trying to keep a non-profit organization operational. 😉
Wow NC has the third most surveyors in the country. I wonder if that number has anything to do with all sub standard surveys I see?

Probably not quite that many. Quite a few are licensed in more than one state. Some in several.

Did you look at the information linked above? NCEES has it broken down by state.
Counting the number of Surveyors in a State has little meaning, unless the population and how that population is dispersed around the State is taken into consideration. Perhaps the number of unique units of land also needs to be in the mix. Then there is the types of surveying being done would be a part of a meaningful study. I got 6 and you have 4 only caters to ego.
