A local adjunct professor of surveying contacted me the other day about a poor showing from his current class on a closed book quiz.?ÿ Here's the quiz.?ÿ If you have the time I'd appreciate some of you looking at and let me know what you came up with.?ÿ No. 16, 17 & 18 apparently gave the class problems.
PS - I have no idea how I did...I probably won't find out until early in the week.?ÿ I'm interested to find out if everybody is as dumb as me.?ÿ 😉
At first glance, this looks like it would take more time than a "pop quiz" should, as there is a fair amount of computing to be done, and there are at least 13 more questions we haven't seen.
I'm confused by the last line of the legend, which says filed and also says unfiled.
I'm not familiar with your filing requirements, but can't find a choice for 16 that I like. I'd hesitantly go with b.
But I don't see why you need to file on the EQ (a, c, and d) since it has a filed record.?ÿ Nor do I see why you would use the SQ of 32 (b).?ÿ
For #16 - if the corners are found in substantial agreement with the last recorded OCCRs the surveyor need not file any new forms.?ÿ
I'm not sure, but 17, 18, & 19 may involve closing corners. It is not completely clear what the given dimensions represent.
Well, I suppose one might use the SQ and SW corner of section 32?ÿ for line in setting the NQ of 5 as opposed to using the corners of section 5 for that.?ÿ Maybe less zig-zagging that way.?ÿ But not for distance.
For 16 we would file for all corners used for our solution whether found or set.?ÿ Apparently this is to verify the monument is still there and the references available to find it today.
Answering 17-19 requires that all sides of the section have known bearings and distances plus the coordinates on at least one corner. Piece of cake after that.
OK .... I've slept on it, and now realize that I'm supposed to answer these qustions with reference to the field sketch provided.?ÿ Duh.?ÿ?ÿ
#16 - D is out because you don't have to file on corners that are found in agreement with the last recorded OCCR.?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿA is out because it doesn't include the C1/4. The difference in B & C is the NW1/4 corner. So it comes down to whether or not you would have to file on the NW corner.?ÿ I say yes, so the answer is B.?ÿ ?ÿ
Would you hold the found monument as the NE corner of sec 5, or use it only for the east line bearing? If I did it right, I find a huge distance between it and the south line of sec 32. It seems to be drawn off that line, also.
Do you believe the NE bearing on the south line of 32??ÿ It is remarkably different from all the SE bearings on the rest of the standard parallel.
I'm sure this?ÿwould result in a dreaded "F", if someone answered "sub it out to a local". ?????ÿ
This isn't the answer that the professor was looking for, but many of these questions can not be answered without the field notes for both townships. Is there a set of assumptions that apply to this quiz that were not stated??ÿ
I'd have to dig through my textbooks for the details of proportioning, but like others have said you'd file a CP&F for a PLSS corner that was set, or found/used that had a material discrepancy with the current record.
The drawing says "All monuments have been confirmed, accepted, and have CCR's previously filed."?ÿ There is confusion in the last line of the Legend where it says "unfiled".?ÿ In many jurisdictions, that means only corners newly set during this exercise need to have filings made.
There seems to be no answer in the list that matches this interpretation; all include either the SQ of sec 32 and/or th EQ of sec 5, both of which say they are accepted (no discrepancy noted for us) and already filed.
Do I use plane trigonometry or do I use average bearings and the red book?

Use the force, Luke....LOL
This thread is awesome. It's amazing that surveyors ever get anything done.
