I am trying to process USGS DEM data in Carlson to create contours. The youtube videos are old and the links are old. I wonder if anyone does this on the regular and can offer any workflow tips and cookbook steps?
thank you
<GFU> (grid file utilities) <import grid> select your DEM file follow prompts to save DEM to *.grd (make note of DEM units if different than yours)
still in GFU, <export grid> (select your *.grd if not already selected) to DEM or Carlson Tri. File, <ok> name new file.
If Units differ you can open your new .tin with Surface, Triangulation file utilities. Load .tin, <next>, <scale>, look over options, Saveas new Tin name with your units "*usft.tin".
Now you have .tin to load into surface manager.
hope this gets your going.
@ozzy84 thanks I am lost in processing hell. I have defined an inclusion area. The thing hangs up on cell 12965000 I get lost at export to carlson tin
@ozzy84 It looks like I have a huge file. Is there away to trim this down and just process a portion of it
I looked at my earlier notes on this process, found that I used QGIS (an open-source GIS program that I highly recommend) to clip the DEM file to the area of interest. Then it worked!
There certainly may be other programs (I believe Gl__al M__per is one, along with ESRI's ArcGIS Pro) that can clip a DEM/TIFF file.
For some reason the word global followed by the word mapper is redacted??

Carlson can handle large .grd better than large .tin
When you finish with GFU import DEM you will have NEW.grd from DEM.
Surface -> Triangle File Utilities -> load GRD -> select New.grd -> next -> pick bounding polylines -> select inclusion polyline-> press enter for no exclusion.
Look at bottom and make sure Output only has "Insides" box checked.
Saveas "NEW-small.grd" -> Exit.
Now open NEW-small.grd in Triangle File Utilities -> next -> saveas NEW-small.tin.
