I uploaded my Topcon MAGNET Field code list (.xml) into Carlson Survey. The descriptors appear as entire words on the computer screen. An example is NG appears as NATURAL GROUND. Can I edit my .xml file to make the code appear as NG? I want to do this at home. I have no access to Carlson Survey.

XML files can be edited with any text editor.
A straight Search&Replace of 'NATURAL GROUND' with 'NG' should be kosher
But you do have to really carefully about all those pointy brackets and slashes.
Having an editor that 'understands' xml helps a lot.
You can download a program called Notepad++ which is pretty good
