Mr. Dent,
While what you say is true, the reason AutoCad costs what it does is because you (or many other folks) will pay what they ask. It is a tool that provides value to the user. AutoDesk has not fallen into the trap of charging for their product based upon their cost (ie time) to provide that product.

Too bad it no longer specializes in CAD software...

Have you looked at the difference in cost of living for the US as a whole and the Bay area? When you do you'll find your not in Kansas, or MS for that matter, any more. Years ago a friend of my was offered a job out for university by a large petroleum company. They gave him a choice of location, SF or Mississippi, with the same pay. It was a no brain'er for him, live like a popper ins SF or like a king on the Gulf.

More power to them for providing their employees with an ample benefit package. As a business owner my employees are most valuable asset.
John Putnam
It's located in one of the most expensive places in the country to live, so some of the salary is paying for the increased housing and/or commuting costs.
And, honestly, do you want the best updating this software or what?
Melita
Their software is leaps and bounds ahead of intellicad or other options (at least for the actual CAD engine side of it) . You pay for quality. And kudos to them for treating their employees good. We pay more than many surveying companies but a one bedroom apartment near here costs $1300 a month. Go an hour south of us towards NYC and its $1600/month. Go into NYC and its a few thousand a month.
One could just as easily post:
HOLY CRAP, $45,386.78 a year for a Licensed Surveyor - I pay instrument men more than that
The AutoDesk headquarters office building is visible from the US101 freeway in San Rafael, Marin County, California.
Marin County=VERY EXPENSIVE.
Marin County is on the other end (north) of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
I thought it was related to hiring innovative minds specializing in hiding commands by order of usefulness, then convincing us to pay for the service...

Yup on Marin County, but hey you get to see Sean Penn's house. LOL
The BEST work for Carlson and don't make that kind of Jack. 😛
There are MANY software firms in that area and yet, according to this report, AutoDesk pays double the average, so evidently it is not really a location thing.
If it were me and my site was doubling my costs, I would move in a heart beat. It's not like that is the ONLY p[lace they can work. Or is it?
And that's for a senior supervisor. Not a crew chief.
So much for the myth of overpaid over paid civil servants.
A significant part of the Autodesk staff is not in San Francisco at all. Civil3D and the Architectural stuff is developed in Manchester NH. Autodesk also has development offices in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Switzerland, Singapore, Oregon, Massachusetts, etc.
:good:

Top Selling and Top Paying are good things to be said about your company.

The headquarters are in San Francisco, the median salary includes all their offices across the land in the calculations. So yes, they are well paid.
Autodesk costs more for two main reasons: They have faithful customers (large engineering corporations) that pay without questions, they know what the market can bear.
HOLY CRAP is right The sad part is that someone qualified will accept that piss poor offer, thus reducing the market value of all of us. Starting salary should be at least 30-40% more, even in Mississippi. Do they pay their managing engineers that?!
