I've been a TurboTax user for over 15 years, and I'm pleased with the application. However, some years back I subscribed to the TurboTax Advantage program, which is basically an auto-renew feature that hits my credit card and sends me a download link every year in November. I signed up because, at the time, it wasn't just convenient, it was also the same price I was paying for the retail version of the product.
Times changed, but I didn't. I learned today that the $100 I've been paying to download TurboTax Home & Business is about $35 more than online discounters like Amazon charge for the boxed product. And with Amazon Prime, to which I subscribe anyway, there's no additional shipping charge.
Color me late to the game. But better late than never!
I am surprised that the new disk requires Win7 or above......it is available for less than $60 for home and business as a download on Amazon.
I am going to sign on to last years and see if it will update or not :gammon:
I prefer to find a young CPA to do my taxws for me. That way if I mess up at least I will know one person at the Iron Bar Hilton.
Actually, it varies from year to year and monthly as you get closer to 4/15 which one of the versions is higher: getting the box or buying online.
I like the software. All the static and the previous years information that gets carried forward online. Sometimes this information didn't carry forward when I switched from box to online and back. That's a pain.
Getting the box usually means it just gets online and downloads a bunch of updates, like the whole software package.
So, I've quit trying to price shop and I just buy the online version once all of my documents in order.

When a surveyor solicits business as a CPA without the appropriate credentials, that's a cause for concern, but preparing one's own taxes doesn't violate any laws.
I do my taxes because the hard work is in compiling the records. Once that's accomplished, entering the numbers into the tax software is nearly trivial. I can't see going to the trouble and expense of delivering all that to a CPA so he can punch in the numbers for me.
Brosef's comment does beg the question, though, for those self-employed surveyors who pay a bookkeeper or accountant to prepare their taxes: how much does it typically cost you each year?

I was shocked!! shocked!! about what it cost to use my accountant.................
I used to do my own, but because of some income I get I needed to do the Turbo Tax premier version.
It ended up costing me about $150 a year.
Then things got complicated and I didn't feel good about doing it anymore so I have the accountant do them.
First year was just under $150.
Last year I paid a bit over $200.
Worth every penny,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I bring in a folder they have me fill out each year and all my collected info, a couple of weeks later I go in and sign and it's done.

I prefer the old guy (he's my age) who I've dealt with for the last 30 years. A professional is worth far more than what they charge unless you have a very simple operation.
BTW - he probably won't be with you - you most likely signed a waiver of liability absolving him of any wrongdoing. Kind of the opposite of what we do...
