For what it may be worth...

Installed SurvPC and FieldGenius on a Leica CS25 Plus GNSS (7 inch screen) running Windows 7, and on a Microsoft Surface Pro (10.7 inch screen) running Windows 8.1, to see if I could get them to connect to a Leica GS15. (one at a time)

I created a bluetooth PAN (select Internet Protocol Version 4, TCP/IPv4, set the IP address to 192.168.253.1, and set the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0) on each computer.

Using a Verizon hotspot I was able to connect to the Florida DOT network, and was able to control the GS15 with the CS25; and, I was able to control the GS15 with the Surface Pro, using either SurvPC or FieldGenius.

This is the first time to run the GS15 with anything other than a CS15 controller. Compared to the CS15 (weight 2.2 pounds), the Surface Pro weighs the same (2.2 pounds), while the CS25 is a heavier (3.0 pounds). Visibility in sunlight is about equal between the CS15 and CS25, however the Surface Pro is the best I have ever seen.

My reason for this post, is that I had been led to believe the GS15 had to be run by either a CS10 or CS15 controller, and I wanted anyone interested to know my experience. I still plan to use the CS15 for some of my work, but when I need lots of screen real estate I will be using the Surface Pro. Also, at the risk of committing heresy I admit I have found the Windows 8.1 operating system not a problem.

Thats great to hear. We were getting surface tablets to load the cad drawing on and keep it in trucks to see where on job site we were at via a small gps receiver antenna. But if you figured out with use of leica gear that would be great. We have gs15 and gs14. Now could you get one to connect to a gs08plus? That would be something for boss man to keep in truck when we arent around for a grade check. He has a hard time seeing the small screen on cs15. Keep us informed!

I have no experience with the GS08plus, however I believe it works with a CS10 controller. If that is true, its bluetooth likely also connects in a Personal Area Network (PAN) as per the GS14/15 with controller (CS10/15). The only way to know for sure would be to try to connect the PC with the GS08plus

Correction to FieldGenius on the Surface Pro. I mistakenly listed this combo. Although, it likely would have worked, instead Microsurvey has seen reason to omit the GS14/15 (and all the other GS variants) from the hardware list when inside the software.
Hope this did not cause a problem for anyone.

What version are you running? I just checked version 7 and the GS15/14/10 are all listed under the model and communication dialog box.

I'm still on 2012 (v6), as I have not upgraded yet. Regardless, I suspect Leica has also done the same thing with v7. Apparently, as the software is installing it somehow checks what it is being installed onto, and unless its a Leica CS25 tablet it strips out all model GS receivers from the list of available Leica models to pick from. I have downloaded and installed the identical versions 2012 (v6) onto both the Surface Pro and the CS25, and GS14/15 shows up in the list on the CS25, but simply is not there on the Surface Pro. I would advise anyone considering purchasing FieldGenius in order to run a Leica GNSS receiver on anything other than a CS25 tablet to be very careful, as they may purchase the software and then not be able to find it as a listed model. This is possibly just another way for Leica to force users to buy their products. Bummer...

I'm not a Leica guy, but I seem to remember others posting about a code or something that you have to purchase to run them with non-Leica hardware.

I think you are referring to GeoCom. If you want to control a data TPS instrument from a none Leica collector you need to have it activated on the instrument. I'm not sure if it required, or and option, for GS units though.

GeoCom is kind of pricey, I just paid $950 to add it to our TCPR1201 and $750 for a MS50.

It does not strip out the Leica instruments if installed on a non-CS25 series tablet. I have version 7 installed on my laptop and it shows the GS series Leica GNSS.

Glad to hear that. Perhaps the disappearance was something to do with v6, although the GS14/15 did show up in v6 on a Sony 8.1 laptop. Just wish I could have the Leica GS15 choice on my Surface Pro tablet.

I just had to pay $950 for the OWI (open world interface?) option on my GS15. Without OWI installed on the GS15, non-Leica software such as Carlson SurvCE/SurvPC could not see/use/connect to the GS15 receiver.(I believe FieldGenius will run the GS15 without OWI, but I assume its considered Leica software)

Just one OWI license for both the TCRP and MS50?
