I understand that there are programs available to allow me to access the office desktop's hard drive (or at least part of it) from anywhere that has internet access. Does anyone do this. Do you feel comfortable(safe) working on a drawing from afar and saving changes? What programs would you recommend?
I use a VPN connection to our network when away from the office. It's like being connected directly to the network, all drives and printers are available to use.
Box and Dropbox work pretty well just to access files remotely.
Our IT guy for our little company has us set up with LogMeIn Hamachi.
Microsoft's "Remote Desktop" is actually pretty good.
The place I'm now working uses "TeamViewer" for this sort of thing
We use Cisco AnyConnect here
VPN here, I can be at a hotel and access the network to upload the days work. Of course I have no idea how it's set up....
I use google drive (dropbox copycat) and the free version of logmein. Works fine for my occasional use.
If you plan to do this yourself, I'd join others here recommending paid versions LogMeIn or TeamViewer. There are cheaper VPN solutions, but they're quite a bit more 'manual' to set up and require solid LAN hardware and procedures to be secure and not feel clunky and encumbered by the extra layers of encryption involved.
I use Logmein quite a bit to do some light work from home just like I was sitting at my desktop in the office. For Cad work it may be a bit clunky depending on your internet speed. I also use logmein on my parents and grandmas computers for when they have computer problems.
Teamviewer 7 free and works well.
I use Log Me In. It allows me to access my office computer. They have a free version which allows you to do everything except drag files from your work computer to your local machine. Although you can always email the file to yourself so you can access it locally.
