Anyone know how to import more than 16 characters for point description in Civil 3D, 2013? For the life of me I can't figure it out. I am using Windows 7 Professional if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Aaron,

I just imported this point to test this, and I had no problem:

I'm using 2014.

RUB IT IN! 😀 Not sure what the issue is! I do have a computer in the office with 2014 on it. Gonna try that one.

I always import by points into Civil 3D as a .csv file, not sure if that is what you use.

When I import a file into Civil 3D I use a .csv PNEZD. The file cannot have a header, and prefer to use codes with nospacingbetweentheletters.

Aaron, is the point data there, but the label style is just chopping it off on the screen?

No, its def cutting it off at 16. When I select what point format I want to use (pnezd) it gives you a preview in the box below. Even there it cuts off @ 16, .txt or .csv

I have C3D 2013 and no problems here. Has to be a setting for it somewhere but I can't find it either.

apparently the symbols - / are fine but "" are not
example

FND-5/8" IR W/YPC "LS 1234" IMPORTS 16 CHARACTERS

FND-5/8 IR W/YPC LS1234 IMPORTS ALLFINE.

There is a setting in the point file format called "comment tag" that I thought if you cleared this out, all symbols would work. Apparently not. Thanks for all the help on this!

Aaron,

From the C3D Help File:

"Raw Description
Specifies a raw description for the point, which is often the description entered by the surveyor in the field. Enter alphanumeric characters. Any character, including a blank, can be used."

Send the point file to either Craig or me.

Dave

The "quote sandwich". Interesting. Thanks for posting your findings.
