Yes, sad to hear the news. I had many a good times with him at ASPS Conferences and he even can out to our Javad LS and Trimble R10 Shoot out. Many phone calls and collaborations during the years.?ÿ

If you had the chance to read his Workbooks you know he will live for many generations. Pour a tall one for DDSM!!!

I hate to hear this. Dan was certainly one of the good ones. Although I never worked under Dan, he had a big impact on my surveying career. I will always be appreciative of the time he took to talk with me about the screwed-up surveys I seem to get myself involved in.?ÿ Beer at the conferences wonƒ??t be the same without him.

Dan was a friend. I spoke with him about 6 wks ago. He said he was in rehab. But, he was not doing real well.

I once found a section corner that I felt he had missed. (30' away) I contacted him. Discussed it. He was very manly. He said "if you have found evidence, that I did not, then you had better go with what you know".

He was very interested in truth.?ÿ

I loved his research ability.?ÿ

DDSM was a good surveyor.?ÿ

He tried very hard to give back to the profession. He made DDSM workbooks on all kinds of obscure surveying aspects. (And some not so obscure).

He knew that the next generation, needed the previous generations mentoring, and the general guidance of loads of history, so as to fix lines, so that they did not move.

We all appreciated his kindly efforts to be Perry Mason, by filling us in on missing stuff.

Research is the core of good surveying.

Thank you Dan.

Nate

His puzzles tended to be a bit harder than the ones at that link, but I had fun solving them.

The news saddened me.?ÿ A man of such distinction will surely be missed.

?ÿ

Save us a place Dan, we'll see you when we get there.

Sorry to hear this. Nice kind generous soul and a great surveyor. We first crossed paths in the mid 1980s at a conference or seminar. He was young and intense poney-tailed surveyor on his 71b and was always step or two ahead on technology. But then again very sociable when it was "beer thirty".?ÿ We stayed in touch through the years by messaging occasionally. He always gave solid survey advice and help.

Personally, I found him to be a kind open minded Christian who listened to all opinions and loved his fellow 'neighbor' and didn't condemn them. Politically, I thought he was a independent with a libertarian lean that melded with his religious beliefs.

At seminars and conventions, seeing his presence was always welcomed.

RIP Dan... condolences to his family. He was very proud of his son?ÿ

I also saw this on Facebook. While I never met DDSM in person, we had a couple of chats on the telephone. He would just call me at random to talk about whatever. I will cherish those phone calls forever and wish I could have had one more.
