After 16 years, RPLS.com is becoming member-supported — with everything older than 90 days staying public and free. I wrote up the full story (what's changing, what isn't, and why) over on the blog.

Any thought of getting this as a notice or ad in the nsps newsletter ? Or even in any possible trade magazine. I'm not sure what of the magazines still exist.

That's a great idea. I'll look into the NSPS magazine.

That's just nuts. You think spreading the word and building community would not be monetized.

Maybe State Societies Newsletters. But that's a lot of contacting.

Well, it is, but I'm going to be building a Resources area that they will likely be interested in. It will be a directory of resources for surveyors, like state associations, colleges, etc. and I would like to contact them anyway to get them added.

Somehow being labeled a 'founder', feels like a bit of a fraud. Just riding on the coattails of a lot of smarter, more experience and better looking surveyors, snatching up a crumb of wisdom here and there.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

A couple of folks mentioned that PayPal wasn't working in the checkout process -- the loading icon was spinning but never loaded anything. I have found and squashed that nasty bug. It should work great now. 🙂

Update 2026-08-05: turns out it was still having some issues. We finally tracked down those issues and it seems to be consistently working now.

A funny thing happened after I submitted my credit card payment for membership. Our card issuing bank called my wife with a fraud alert within about 30 minutes. Totally freaked her out. Not because it was for a surveying website, but because our kid is on a trip to Panama and they were going to freeze the card. She got it squared away, but we thought it pretty weird that they pegged RPLS as a possible fraudulent charge to the card.
