UPDATED WITH CORRECTIONS TO THE DATES 2026-08-05

My wife and I are shipping out to Pittsburgh on the morning of August 10, 2026. We'll be there overnight before driving to Buffalo, where we'll be for 5 days. Then we return to Pittsburgh on August 19, flying home the next day.

Would anyone in Pittsburgh and/or Buffalo care to have a little BeerLegger somewhere? We'll be bringing goodies to give away.

We aren't super familiar with anything in Pittsburgh, so we're open to whatever location you see fit. We are planning a drive up to Shanksville though, to see the 911 memorial there. As for Buffalo, we're not much more versed there, but we did have a small BeerLegger several years ago in nearby Tonawanda.

Would love to meet as many of you fine folks as possible, and with any luck, perhaps this won't be our first visit with others.

Anyone interested?

  • Travel day: August 10 to Pittsburgh. Possibility of meeting that evening.
  • Buffalo: August 11 thru 15.
  • Travel day: August 16. Might be able to meet up along the way.
  • Pittsburgh: August 17 thru 19.
  • Travel day: August 19, then leaving Pittsburgh on August 20. Could possibly meet for lunch.

I would attend if I could, but will be on vacation 8/7-8/12, arriving late on the 12th. As rankin_file says, the cathedral of learning is a cool building, try to go on a tour of the nationality rooms. It is a very prominent building. In the late 80's we were doing a lot of control for preliminary mapping for a new highway (Mon-Fayette Expressway). One of the requirements was that each point had to have an azimuth mark. I did a lot of polaris obs (in those days GPS availability was limited to about 6 hours), but near the city we could see the cathedral of learning from a lot of the stations. It is an NSRS intersection station (KX2072). So I got permission from the University to set a point on the roof (above the 42nd floor) with GPS and we tied in the center of the radio antenna.

Another cool thing is the WW2 submarine at the science center on the north shore.

Bummer! It would be great to finally meet you.

We will be back in Pittsburgh on the 20th (I think, gotta check with my travel agent (wife)) and may be able to meet then as well.

@john-hamilton Boy, did I have the dates mixed up. Checked with my travel agent and updated the original post.

Here's how it's actually going to go:

  • We arrive in Pittsburgh the night of August 10, but are just staying the night and heading to Buffalo on August 11.
  • We'll be in Buffalo from August 11 through August 15.
  • Then we drive back to Pittsburgh on August 16.
  • We'll be in Pittsburgh from August 16 through 20.
  • We fly out at about 5pm on August 20. We'd be limited on that day.

So yeah, if you'd like to meet up during that time in Pittsburgh, that would be awesome!

@bobwesterman Yeah, I know nothing about Pittsburgh, so I was hoping someone would have suggestions for the where and when.

Where are you staying?  I'm sure we could come up with somewhere close by, is there anyone here from Pittsburgh besides me and John Hamilton.  I haven't seen Sergeant Schultz in a while, I think he moved to West Virginia.

@bobwesterman

We're staying at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Pittsburgh West - Green Tree.

875 Greentree Road, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15220

I was hoping this was a good, centralized location for the ballpark, downtown cathedral, the cable car thingy, etc... 😊

I wouldn't call it centralized, anything that was central to the places you mentioned would be in Downtown Pittsburgh, and that would be terrible for driving around.

It will be very easy to get to all the places you mention From Greentree.

The only problem I have is that since I quit going to bars most of the places I used to like have closed down.

@john-hamilton  I know you don't live close to the city, do you have any good ideas?

@bobwesterman I live in the South Hills, Bethel Park close to the Washington County line. I used to take people to Fat Heads on South Side but it recently closed. That said, I would stay away from the South Side late at night but it is OK in the day or early evening. A good restaurant there is Dish Osteria on 17th. The strip district is a good place (not strip clubs, the area is just called that) and then further up the Allegheny is Lawrenceville. Lots of bars and restaurants in all of those areas.

I thought you were somewhere between Irwin and New Stanton.

I would definitely say avoid South Side at night, it all depends on what you're looking for.

Damn, gotta go, I'll look at it tomorrow.

Welp, we made it to Pittsburgh and then Buffalo. I sure hope we can make something work next week when we return to Pittsburgh!

Side note: I forgot to bring the goodies. 🙁 But if we have a BeerLegger, I'll get mailing addresses. 🙂
