I've currently got a 2007 Topcon HiPer Ga Base/Rover with GLONASS and GPS. The specs say it has 40 channels at up to 20hz. I usually get 10-12 satellites, occasionally 15 or so and canopy shots are hit or miss, but mainly misses. I've never used anything newer than this older 2007 model so I have no idea if upgrading to something newer is going to be a minor improvement or a gamechanger. What kind of improvements should I expect with something newer/affordable like an R8 or SP60?
I follow another surveyor that has updated his Topcon to the latest and greatest software and updates for his receivers and I constantly find his monuments 0.6?ñft out of place under canopy.
My suggestion is to set two good points under good sky and TS into canopy.
Other than that get onboard the Nate, Shawn and others riding the train with Javad equipment.

Oh hell yes!?ÿ
I'd be open to trying Javad, but with my budget I'd need to find a used receiver probably a couple of years old. I'm not seeing a lot of used Javad receivers for sale, unfortunately.?ÿ
I doubt that those models will give you much that you haven't already got. Perhaps if you could go for an R10.?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ
Well, the idea is to make money from the investment. If you do enough under canopy where it would save enough time to equal or exceed the monthly payment, then it might make sense. I think all surveyors should figure out a way to charge for services that allows them to invest in fairly recent technology. If we don't have better measurement capabilities than contractors/engineers/foresters/general public, etc. we might find (have found) ourselves becoming irrelevant in many areas of service. Wish I could tell you exactly how to do that, its been a battle for decades.
I saw some ads that the latest receivers can receive 440 multi constellation channels (whatever that means). So when they made a demo at one of the surveyors convention, the demo data came out that it actually recorded 20 satellites that were usable. In short it was able to see a lot of satellites but came processing time, most of those satellite data were disregarded for one reason or another.
So 440 channels may be useful if you are able too use all 440 channels. What they don't tell you is how many of those 440 channels are really available during your survey.
We have a Topcon Hiper V and a Hiper HR.?ÿ

Hiper V with GPS and Glonass and the HR with the rest as well.

The extra sats on the HR are very noticeable and we are grateful for them.
I've heard a .ot of good things from Javad and some bad. The bad is generally associated with the learning curve.
Whatever you settle on make sure it can use all 4 constellations for the solutions and has L5. Do not accept anything less no matter how slick the salesman is.
I started out using a Topcon Hiper+ for a rover with a Topcon Legacy E for a base. With Survey Pro on a nomad data collector using CMR+ corrections that system struggled a little under canopy. I upgraded my rover to a Topcon GR-3 and saw an improvement under canopy. Then, I started using the Hiper+ for a base and RTCM3.0 for corrections. That yielded another significant improvement. I'm using Carlson SurvCE now (and it's probably my imagination); but, that seems to have improved things as well. It's no JAVAD or Trimble R10, but, it was cheap enough.
