In the North East, but location probably not a factor, familiarity with Topcon might be. Looking to rent a Topcon DC short term.
Who do you like?
Hayes Instrument
Jerry Shearon or Adrian Franklin
Just get a job surveying and be done with it.

MS (Maine Tech. Source) has always been my go-to dealer.
They are in ME and MA, and I think NY
What and how much are you looking to do?
There are smart phone DC apps. You could also buy an HP 35 and find online traverse/sideshot programs for free. Of course you'd have to enter everything manually and write down the output coords.
There are lots of cheaper options if you're not doing too much. As I understand it you are doing this for your own experience?

I don't like Topcon, but Geoshack might be a place to rent from; pretty sure they have some Nation Wide Topcon distribution thing going on.
Could you elaborate on the Smart Phone DC apps? I'd be interested in seeing them!
Contact Admar Positioning, ask for Paul S. They are Topcon dealer for NY state. Mention my name. They will deliver to your house and provide training, or they will call me to do it.

Thanks, all. These should get me started.:-)
Zoid, Total Station Top Survey is one. I have downloaded the demo for my android phone but haven't used it yet.I believe it only cost $10 for the full version and connects to the instrument via bluetooth. I read about it on this forum but ended up buying a collector before trying it. It seems like it might be OK for a small job if you don't have anything better.
Many thanks! I'll check it out! I'm definitely not planning to ditch my collector but it's always exciting seeing new advancements!
