From sunny AZ to snowy MI. My kids are there, I've got a 5 month old grandson I've never held, and think I still have a snow shovel.
Bailing out of this zip code. Going back to my roots. Leave early next week to start on Fri or Sat. Put 2,000 miles under my belt and I'm good to go.
Jack of all trades kind of position. RLS, civil inspector, kinda do some CAD, client contact, and who knows what else. Doesn't really matter though to me.
Looking forward to it.
Congratulations!
But you could have picked a better time of year to move from Arizona to Michigan. I imagine at some point in your drive you will be on I-44, passing through Tulsa. As you cross SR75, have a look and see if my tire tracks heading north are still on fire.
Excellent choice.
It is way too early for me, but I do look forward to grandkids someday.
Peace Wayne.
EDIT: If you are going to be driving through Indy, I will be glad to buy you a beverage.
anti-Snowbird
Isn't that being an anti-snowbird (or contrary snowbird) since you are leaving a warm clime in time for a snowy hell?
I hope you fare well. That's the cool thing about home..it's good to get outa there.. and it's good to get back.
Money Penny retires from the DOT in a couple of months here in Oklahoma. We've toyed with the idea of moving to Wisconsin (where she is from). I've gotten kind of fond of a little town up there on the lake called Cudahy. Nice parks and beer halls on every corner...;-)
Be in touch and drive careful!
You've been a good Arizona poster. I trust we will still hear from you when you are way up there in Yankeeland?
"Excellent choice."
NO, NO, NO - not an excellent choice at all! You are one of the few voices of reason here!
Can't blame you with regards to the grandchild though - I have one that's 2-1/2 months old in Tucson and its a struggle not to go down EVERY weekend. You will enjoy every minute with him!
Best of luck buddy, and please keep posting here.
Jim
Cool, go for it and post some pics of the little beast, err Grandson! 😉
Hey all, thanks for the words of wisdom! All well received. I gotta do what I gotta do though, and it's a tough call on my part as well as SWMBO's. She is on page and it's a good thing. Opportunity knocks and you need to know what is what and where things happen.
I won't get into economics or politics or nonsense, but the croonies in this part of the state (likely the entire state) are killing growth. Surveyors live on growth. Bad formula. Without a niche, you become .... just another surveyor. Now I'm going back to my niche that got me here in the first place, even if it was 30 or so yrs ago.
I'll still be around to bug you guys, trust me.... 😉
Go Spartans and certainly Go Red Wings!!
Safe travels mi amigo, sounds like you made the right call.
You're not from the U.P. so I can understand wanting to go "home."
I found California and I'll never leave it:-) Even though my odd karma has me in a place in California that resembles Idaho in many ways. Even my old buddy Doin' could be happy here in Tuolumne County. Of course I am too, so what does that mean?
It means we're all very similar in almost every important way.
Meaning, of course, it doesn't matter where you are. It only matters...blah, blah, blah...
Sorry, I ran out of sensible things to say. Good luck, Wayne.
May the Wings never disappoint you.
Don
> May the Wings never disappoint you.
Good luck with that
And just enough time to settle in before November 15.
Here in CA, deer season is in August.
Other things you can get used to doing: Ice fishing, snowmobiling, xc-skiing, snowshoeing, scraping ice off the windshield before you can leave for work, navigating icy roads without the use of chains (I think their still illegal to use on public roads there), shoveling the foot of snow that fell overnight so you can get out of the driveway, wash the road salt off your truck every few days...

I am still learning that then is a good time to stop, nice job Don.
As my daughter tells me often, "throw the shovel down Daddy, throw it down."
More power to you. I never adjusted to the Michigan winters. Summers were fantastic, but, oh those winters. I developed a form of claustrophobia in the great outdoors. It comes from being trapped in snow higher than the top of your vehicle (by far) and not being able to get to wherever it was you needed to go. Anxiety attack h-e-double hockey sticks. Of course, the drifting caused by the gale-force winds coming straight off of Lake Michigan did not help. Still have a number of friends in that part of the world including one who spent the first 22 years of his life in Mississippi and Alabama.
Good luck to you, Wayne. Keep posting.

Coming from a Dallas Stars fan, that's funny! 😛
M-O-N-T-R-É-A-L is the new hockey dynasty, ostie. 😉
Be sure to have a cold one at Fink's when you get back,... it's still there but not owned by Nick and Mike any more.
Good Luck.
> Be sure to have a cold one at Fink's when you get back,... it's still there but not owned by Nick and Mike any more.
That's too funny. I used to frequent Nick Finks in Northville back in the old days, even the Box Bar in Plymouth. Some more I don't remember...lol
Being born bred MI for my first 49 yrs, I'm more than accustomed to snow & cold. But after some serious cold hands, general geezerness, and some broken body parts I defected to AZ from Grand Rapids after living there 20 or so yrs. Toss in da' UP, Northwest MI, and all over before that final destination.
The key to the snow is to get out and do stuff. Love to X-country ski, lace up the skates for some pond hockey, make snowmen. I'm looking forward to making snow angels with my soon to be 3 yr old grand son, maybe let his little brother help.
I'll be moving to Brighton for now and working in South Lyon (SW Oakland County).
Thanks for all the kind words fellow beeleggers. I'm not falling off the planet just yet, but do have some chores. I'll definitely be back, but maybe a pseudo name. You'll know me by my avatar that tells it all.
Wayne:
Sorry to see you go. I guess it's been about 2½ or 3 years since I saw you last. Since the change in the number of APLS Board of Directors, I haven't been to any of the meetings since April 2012.
I wouldn't relish going back to the "Frozen North Country." Having been in the sunny south for 27 years, I know I wouldn't even think about spending any more winters in Wyoming. Too used to the nice mild winters, and about the same summer temps as what we had in Wyoming, here in Cochise County.
The old 450C plotter you gave me is still working. My other one got some glitch about a month ago and won't hardly turn on, except maybe a by chance happening.
Take care my friend and keep in touch.
Leonard
