...we're probably a dime a dozen.?ÿ I have several friends that have lost some level of their hearing over the years.?ÿ One or two are almost completely deaf.?ÿ I have an old buddy that I only speak with during football season.?ÿ For the last three or four years we've been reduced to texting because talking on the phone with him is impossible.
I am not only a victim of deafness and horrible tinnitus, I am also married.?ÿ This elevates my malady to another level entirely.?ÿ My wife is convinced I ignore her.?ÿ She winces every time I either ask "what did you say?" or "did you say something?".?ÿ In stores at the cash register I generally just keep my mouth shut and smile at the clerk.?ÿ I'm oblivious to what they said...and drive-through fast food is just a distant memory.
I used to be able to hear if the washer or dryer was running from anywhere in the house.?ÿ Nowadays I have to place my hand on it to check.?ÿ My dogs are wonderful burglar alarms...as long as my wife get's my attention to ask me to see what they're barking at.?ÿ The other day I realized an ambulance was behind me in traffic making all sorts of noise.?ÿ I didn't know it was there until I saw it in the rear-view mirror.?ÿ I guess that was the last straw.?ÿ I made an appointment to get a hearing test here in a few days.
Just for funnies I'm going to try and start conversations in the waiting room with other patients..it should be fun.?ÿ
After 16 years of aircraft maintenance, I had lost a good bit of my hearing.?ÿ Add in the concerts, loud juke joints, and shooting ranges, and you have moderate hearing loss.?ÿ I have trouble holding a conversation with anyone unless I can read their lips. The good thing about reading lips, I have never been told, "my eyes are up here".?ÿ Good luck!
My hearing loss is noticeable, but not to the disability level. I had the tv too loud for my visiting daughter and I still couldn't make out all of the words.
So I bought some Lively hearing aids online with an online audiologist and hearing test. They're great; I love them, control them with my phone.
But there's one problem. I can't wear them when I'm driving. Somehow they seem to be linked to other drivers' horns, so when I'm wearing them while I'm driving, all of these nearby horns go off. Not a problem when I'm not wearing them.
That must be unnerving for all of those other drivers, so I just wear them at home.
Not sure I qualify for "old" but my ears ring like there's no tomorrow. Especially my right ear.
It's not that I can't hear, more like people mumble when they talk. HA The most trouble I have comes from locations with lots of background noise, such as restaurants or shopping centers.?ÿ
I've been wearing ear plugs to concerts, dirt track races and when I mow/trim the yard over the last few years but it's much too late. Just thinking maybe I can slow down the results for a little while.?ÿ
That being said, this past weekend I went to Kansas to see my folks and spend the holiday weekend shooting fireworks and hanging with old friends. The first roman candle I lit, second day of the trip, had a "misfire". On the fifth and final shot from the candle, it barely made it out of the tube before it detonated. Causing my right ear to become "muffled" and ring for the next two days louder than before.
Good luck!
I lost the hearing in one ear about 8 years ago. For two years I wouldn't tell my wife which ear it was. Boy, payback was hard when she finally figured it out! That ear is stone cold shot, but I still can't believe how many people still don't believe that I can't hear on that side after all these years. They seem to think its some kind of a joke. Then others get mad at me when I ask them to repeat themselves multiple times because they aren't increasing the volume at all.
Covid masks and plastic guards at check outs were real interesting.
I am not only a victim of deafness
Um, What was that Mr cash? I've got hearing loss.....
?ÿ
@mathteacher That makes me realize what is going on. I see a few old ladies with white hair going about 15mph and getting honked at by everybody. They must have the same hearing aids triggering all these horns. Someone ought to call the manufacturer and have them look into it.
I am also married
Weird how my hearing seemed to have no issues after the above was corrected
I also have your issues, so I will shout my comment. KEEP US POSTED!
Good joke:
Old man and his wife in the exam room at the doctor's office, he had been complaining of pain in his left ear.
The doctor looked in his ear, grabbed some forceps and removed a dirty wadded up bit of aluminum foil.?ÿ As he examined it he finally remarked, "This is a suppository!"?ÿ
The old man jerked a bit and then turned to his wife and said, "Hey hon, I think I know where my hearing-aid is at..."
My wife says I have two faults.?ÿ They are I don't listen to her and something else........................
Female deafness is what I call it.?ÿ Any woman talking to me had better have my attention first.?ÿ Otherwise, I notice THAT LOOK on their face which tells me that something has already been said to me.?ÿ I sometimes say something like, "I'm sorry.?ÿ I was calculating the square root of 13,543 in my head.?ÿ What was it you said to me?"
Oldest daughter is 48.?ÿ When I saw her two months ago she proudly displayed the twin hearing aids she had acquired.?ÿ For her, this was essential as she is a counselor working with children for a living.?ÿ The conversations are generally rather quiet as they are addressing personal shortcomings.?ÿ She quickly learned how to set them correctly for different situations.?ÿ She does this via her smartphone.?ÿ She is very satisfied with the results.
My mother's father had a bone-conduction type hearing aid from a fairly early age.?ÿ His mother had an ear horn, as they were called.?ÿ Sort of a reverse megaphone.?ÿ My mother started wearing a hearing aid when she was 32.?ÿ I took her to a funeral for a cousin on that side of her family when she was in her 70's.?ÿ Every person present at the family gathering later over the age of 60 that was related to her had a hearing aid of some sort.
My father had excellent hearing till the day he died.?ÿ That was not a good thing for me growing up.
I did have an awkward moment recently while chairing a meeting.?ÿ A lady said, "So moved." and the fellow next to her said "Second." and I looked around to see if anyone was going to make a motion.?ÿ I instantly detected from their return looks at me what had just happened but I did not hear.?ÿ Our seating arrangement prevents me from lip reading.
WHAT?????
???? ?????ÿ
Make damn sure Medicare or your supplement (see J.J. Walker's "Dyno-mite" commercial which runs continuously on Grit TV) covers the cost of the $7k hearing aids the audiologist will try and sell you. ?????ÿ
(then check on-line how much the mark up is)
I see a few old ladies with white hair going about 15mph and getting honked at by everybody.
Same thing happens to me when I'm going 75mph and zig zaging around them...... ?????ÿ
My father had excellent hearing till the day he died.
My Dad used a car key to clean his ears; so pretty much the opposite...
I had perfect hearing, bent down to pick up a piece of paper at the office, stood up and was overcome by dizziness. I thought I had an ear infection and staggered to the doctor. Seems I was completely deaf in the left ear.
I got anti-biotics and steroids prescribed.
After two weeks I finally went to a specialist and he told me I had sudden hearing loss with dizziness-----that's the medical description from what he told me.
He was impressed that I was able to move around and not "puke my guts out".?ÿ
He was also happy that I recovered limited hearing I have 100% for bass frequencies and 0% for high frequencies in my left ear so 50% is how they labeled it. Right ear is perfect.?ÿ
Makes for some confusing noises.
Packed restaurants are challenging.?ÿ
Tinnitus is a symptom, if I don't think about it I don't notice it, but as soon as the subject comes up,,,,,,,,,there it is.
Packed restaurants are challenging. ..
Ain't it the truth??ÿ I've found myself over the years avoiding certain establishments because of the noise.
The other day my wife asked where we should go a dinner "out".?ÿ When I told her where she said that place had lousy food and asked why I wanted to go there.
I told her it was because they had carpet and low ceilings...
@mightymoe Frequency deafness (or at least lessening) is my problem.?ÿ I can hear some things my wife can't but some frequencies I can hardly hear at all.?ÿ Years of shooting shotguns and being around loud equipment have just damaged the cilia in my ears that transmit the sound waves.?ÿ They don't regrow, we just have to live with the loss.
Andy
Huh???ÿ Did you say something??
