It's been a while since I have been on the Surveyor Connect site, but I'm alive and well, cancer stays in remission.?ÿ I got a 12 month "hall pass" for recurring checkups.?ÿ I've been traveling a lot when I'm not living out at my bush home off the grid.?ÿ Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Iceland and Scotland already this year, and Culebra Island off of the Pacific Coast of Panama next month, then Costa Rica again in October.?ÿ Mostly in pursuit of fishing on the flyrods.?ÿ Been flying a lot, although I had a structural failure in my plane the end of June last year where I became a rider instead of pilot.?ÿ Not hurt but the plane was so I worked hard to get it back in better shape than ever.?ÿ I still frequent and present on the Mentoring Mondays crowd-source mentoring sites.?ÿ Still haven't failed at retirement a fourth time, and going to keep it that way.?ÿ Seizing every day that I can, Ive learned that life and health can be tenuous. Lots of glacier flying coming up this month yet, winter is drunk and won't go home so the conditions are great.?ÿ?ÿ

Northern Surveyor 1, cancer 0. Actually, every cancer free day adds to the count. This week had a retired surveyor friend receive an experimental type implant in his brain to help control the symptoms of Parkinson's. One day at a time.

Costa Rica again in October.

Apparently you like Costa Rica. What attracts you most, if you don't mind me asking? We flew to San Jose and stayed overnight before a bus ride to the West coast. There we boarded a Holland America ship for a trip through the Panama Canal, a few Caribbean and then to Ft. Lauderdale.

I remember San Jose well because of the breathtaking historical architecture everywhere. The Hotel we stayed in was jaw dropping beautiful. The only thing disturbing to me is they make fried rabbit look just like fried chicken. Don't ask!

Good news and thanks for the update.  I take it fly fishing relates to cancer remission?

And for the younger surveyors - due to increased incidence of colon cancer, the recommended age for the first one is now at 45 for a healthy individual and if you have a family history of cancer you might need to start screening earlier.  The earlier any issue is caught, the easier it is to deal with and symptoms do not always show up early.

This post makes me happy. But I also get to live vicariously through you via your Facebook posts. I loved all the Iceland photos. The better half and I want to go there soon!

@wendell

My son-in-law's parents took a trip to Iceland on some sort of massive group trip a few years ago.  Once they arrived in Iceland, everyone in the group was gathered together in a large hall and the organizers had each person tell something about themselves that might be outstanding in some way.  The goal was to get everyone to look at everyone else and familiarize themselves such that they MIGHT recognize some of their fellow travelers as they continued their journeys.  His mother said something about the high school she attended in the boondocks of New Jersey nearly 60 years earlier.  A voice boomed from across the room saying something like, "I thought that might be you.  I was in your sister's class."  It really was a fellow from that same community all those years ago.

We like Costa Rica for many reasons.  Probably top of the list is the people are very friendly and helpful, and it is a very safe country in Central America.   Its easy to get by with no command of Spanish, but having a little bit of fluency helps.   The country is very diverse with the Atlantic Side and Pacific Side being very different in terrain, flora and fauna.   For me, there is some of the best flyfishing in the world there.   The last 3 years I have only caught one Tarpon UNDER a 100# in the Rio Colorado delta and offshore there.  The Rio Colorado is the outlet of Lago Nicaragua, an enormous lake spanning nearly the width of Nicaragua.  The food is good, the costs are not expensive although prices having been creeping up post-covid.  The two years we were there during Covid it was epic, as most visitors stayed away.  Oh, ya the coffee, absolutely great.

@northernsurveyor How I wish my shoulder could handle a #100 + Tarpon on a fly rod. I have not been to Costa Rica, but it's high on my list.
