Anyone tried to rent a car recently? A lot of my work is far away from home, I typically fly and rent a car. I just rented one for four days, it was $900. Some of the vehicles were $400/day. I rented one last week in the midwest, the guy told me I was lucky I reserved ahead of time because the price I got had quadrupled.?ÿ

Apparently they sold a lot of their cars last year due to lack of demand, now they are having trouble getting new ones due to the microprocessor shortage.?ÿ

I have a job coming up in Guyana, they told me I have to quarantine for 7 days upon arrival. Not a Guyana government requirement, but an Exxon Mobil requirement. But there I will hire a car and driver, too difficult to get around and they drive on the left. I have driven on the left before but it is difficult to get used to. There the problem is going to be hotel, the nice hotels are in short supply because of an oil boom. Similar to when I flew my plane to Williston, ND a few years ago and had to sleep in a rental car at the airport.?ÿ
Rent a U-Haul?
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
Sooo.. what you're saying is mucho free upgrades? ?????ÿ
You are a true modern cowboy. ?ÿGiddy-up!
I admire and wistfully enjoy your tales of exploration work.?ÿ I put it down to get married( huge mistake) and occasionally get the bug to go to the ends of the earth again, and just travel for fun.?ÿ Pretty cool youre getting paid to be out in it still John.
A few times I've had a premonition that the client supplied accommodations are not going to be up to scratch, so I've taken one of those two-person dome tents and a hiker's air-mattress, and spent many a glorious night camping on the veranda or in the garden while the bed bugs feast elsewhere inside the hovel.
But there I will hire a car and driver, too difficult to get around and they drive on the left. I have driven on the left before but it is difficult to get used to.
Trinidad. They drive on the left, up and down hills, around curves, no streetlights or stop signs. Get near an intersection, you honk then fly through it.
You're completely sober by the time you get where you're going.
I wrecked my truck a month ago. The only way you could get a rental in through the insurance agency.?ÿ And parts are backordered for repairs. I am 40 out on a rental (progressive covered 30 day and enterprise gave me a discount rate on the remainder). I spoke to many agents trying to get a rental after my wreck almost impossible without insurance.?ÿ?ÿ
In this country the horn is an insult and instigator to violence. I learned the language of car horn in Kuwait, and I'm told it's similar in Cairo and New Dehli too. It's a means of communication. Insults are far down the list.
If anyone is planning to visit Orlando and wants a rental car they better reserve it about two months in advance and hope it??s there waiting for them. Rental cars?ÿare tough to come by currently. ?????ÿ
The wife and I are attending a wedding near Sacramento, CA in early October.?ÿ Will probably drive from CO just to ensure we have a car available.?ÿ Perhaps I'll put her on a plane and drive solo for the cross-country part so I can blow out the mental cobwebs without much care for other's feelings for a couple or three days....
I worked near Cairo, we had a car and driver, traffic was unbelievable. At least they drove on the right. And on the sidewalks...But, the drivers weren't very good driving in the sand in the desert. They got it stuck, I got it out. After that they would drive in the city and I would drive in the sand.?ÿ
A better mode of transport there...
I'm terrified of camels....
I've been told baby camel is the thing to eat if you're ever given the chance.
It is a bit unnerving on top of one. And as we were riding through the streets of Cairo on out way to the pyramids we saw raw camel meet hanging outside of butcher shops. Not sure if the camels knew what it was...
At the hotel they had a buffet with a lot of different meats, everything except pork. Rabbit, birds, etc.?ÿ
I ran levels in the USVI from the a tidal BM in downtown Charlotte Amalie to Red Hook on the east end of the island along a very narrow twisty no-shoulder-to-speak-of road with heavy traffic. Very scary. Almost as scary as doing GPS at night there.?ÿ

Leaving the airport with the rental car I nearly crashed head on into a car coming in. Not too bad driving on the road, it is making turns that get confusing.?ÿ?ÿ
I refused to rent a car and found Sajeed the Pashtun taxi guy?ÿ whom I paid handsome ly and had him the whole month.
Travelling to Hawaii in about 3-4 month periods through the Covid: March as the pandemic took off the rental cars were similar to before the pandemic, August they weren't available at all, by January cars were available and at a very reduced cost, so I rented a pick-up. Now the costs are 10x what they were in January and it's funny, some of the rental cars locally have Hawaii plates. I suppose they didn't want cars sitting around so they shipped them off island.?ÿ
It makes travelling inter-island difficult now. I used to be able to book a flight and vehicle the day before without any problems, now I have to plan weeks in advance and even then the rental car prices are still high and sometimes none are available.
My Muslim friends agree. I'm bummed ???? didn't get baby camel shawarma.
I've go no regrets though for sure.
