Reminds me of the time when the old Land Rovers had a hand throttle. When grid surveying (by chain!) proposed sites for opencast coal we used to set the hand throttle on minimum, point it in the right direction and the vehicle then proceeded at a slow walking pace along the survey line. We collected more pegs and laths from the back, as needed.

On occasion something caused a distraction and we then had to retrieve it from hedge, ditch, whatever it had carried on to find! Happy days.

Land Rovers are nice, no doubt. Lot's of rich people drive them here in Orlando as status symbols. Some of them even have the bar thingy on front to push rhinoceros's, elephants, and wayward Lions out of the way while driving to their multi million dollar homes. Furthest "off road" they ever go is maybe in a grass parking lot. ?????ÿ

Is there still a problem with those critters in Florida? I though for sure Johnny Weissmuller and Buster Crabbe tamed those savage beasts.

The new 'Defender' looks to be just another unibody SUV.?ÿ Kind of disappointing.

I have a 1970 Series IIa with the hand throttle or poor man's cruise control.?ÿ I used it for a large reservoir project years ago.?ÿ Mounted my GPS antenna to the roof rack and started cross sectioning the high desert.?ÿ Sage brush over the top of the rig.?ÿ Set the hand throttle and just go.?ÿ At some point the brush worked its way under the bonnet and proceeded to remove the fan belt.?ÿ Being a couple hours drive from the nearest town of any size I ended up using panty hose as a make shift fan belt.?ÿ Got me from Duck Valley to Boise.

I also had a 1990 Range Rover that I purchased from a gentleman on his way to prison.?ÿ It was kind of beat so I had no problem stripping it down for survey rig.?ÿ The thing would go anywhere.?ÿ At the time I was involved with a bunch of fiber lines.?ÿ I would drive the thing until I would go no further and then dismount the ATV and continue on.

All side windows that are not on a door must be able to open from the outside for an SUV to be really considered as a real survey vehicle.

Isn't anyone going ask where the pantyhose came from?

I think that is one of those "need to know" kind of things, and I don't need (or want) to know.

I was, however years ago I read a England coarse fishing magazine article wherein some fellows went out late night fishing in winter and to overcome the cold they each wore a couple of pairs of pantyhose under their leggings and waders. They subsequently got lost and were mistaken for burglars, arrested and strip searched, then released when no stolen items were found on them. So something similarly logical and innocent is going on here in the surveyor world.

One particularly cold winter I noticed one of my crew members taking longer than usual on a trip to the bathroom.?ÿ I asked if everything was alright.?ÿ He told me he was having a hell of a time going to the bathroom while wearing pantyhose under his coveralls.?ÿ I just assumed he wore them to help him keep warm.?ÿ I asked how long he had been wearing pantyhose under his coveralls.

He replied he had been wearing them ever since his wife found them in the glove box of his truck...

They took care of all them including "The Creature from the Black Lagoon". Most of Johnny Weissmuller's films were shot at Silver Springs (FL) along with LLoyd Bridges in Sea Hunt. The biggest problem associated with all this filming was the introduction of rhesus monkeys to the environment for the tarzan flicks. They became acclimated to the local climate quickly and began to reproduce in the wild. In the 60's and 70's they began to overrun the place and steps were taken to eliminate the population. Didn't work. There is a natural wildlife corridor running basically through the center of Fl. and the monkeys adapted quickly. About once a month someone spots one in a tree but it isn't really a big deal anymore. Wish they were python and Iguana connoisseurs then they would become the new state animal. ???? ?ÿ

Probably from the same guy that invented the Bra and High Heels. All conceived to enhance the female anatomy for male enjoyment. Stiletto heels are absolutely the worst thing a woman could wear for extended periods. It screws up every bone in their foot/feet, causes Hammer Toe, Bunions, and crooked toe growth. One of my neighbors is a podiatrist specializing in reconstructive foot surgery and that's all he ever talks about is feet. Well that and his car. ?????ÿ
