Nebraska is not all corn fields. I spent a couple of days this past weekend hanging out with a couple of my fellow surveyors looking for 1870's monuments in the Wildcat Hills region in western part of the state.
Awesome
Terrific photos and work !
Now, you seem significantly short of snow .................. 🙂
Unfortunately, we are too here.
Maybe McMoundfinder Freres Moose Jaw Office could supply some Kent ?
Cheers,
Derek
Fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing topography. What sort of rock make up local geology?
Very striking photographs.
Could you add some explanations; what survey marks are you seeing and what are the significances?
Thanks.
Came within about 30 miles of there one time a few years ago when traveling from Chadron to Benkleman. Bridgeport is as close as we came to the Wildcat Hills.
That would be Wilson Wilson.

The geology is a sandstone type of formation with probably limestone mixed in. The famed Chimney Rock, Scotts Bluff, and Courthouse Rock are part of this formation. The surveying is basically just recovering some 1873 GLO monuments. The second photo appears to be a large fossilized bone. The tree was thought to be a tree we were searching for that was designated as a township corner, but there was not significant evidence to proof it. It might be a line tree since there was a blaze on just one side. The older guy holding the stone is a landowner who came along and was thrilled that we found some of the stones. Not much surveying is done in this area. That is both good and bad. Many would probably not have spent the time that we did searching.
Looks like a blast. I'll be applying to NE very soon. Looking forward to doing some work in western region of the state one day.
Very Cool. About to start a job on Highway 385 from Alliance to Angora. Hopefully much of the same topography.
Wowser, that is what I call real surveying, and in great scenery. I am so envious. I've been good and I wanna go too.
Nice 1/4!!
Scenery is awesome. Great post. It's interesting to note that was part of the great http://www.colorado.edu/engineering/ETH/projects/geology/maps.html&apos ;">inland sea of the cretacious period.
Beautiful..
Awesome pics, wish we had geography like that in my part of TX.
Thanks for posting these fantastic photos.
Thank you sir! It's really nice for those of us who don't venture far from home to see what some other areas look like.
