Found this article on-line about a Mr. Waters shooting his uncle and cousins over a drive-way/property line dispute. I actually did a survey for this guy about 5 or 6 years ago. Met him and his father. They live in God's country at the base of Big Frog Mtn. in Polk County, TN. Sad to hear of this happening.

From the news story one wonders if the victims were the ones that pushed an attempted land grab to the breaking point. If so, that needs to be considered by the courts.

What's to consider? Murder is murder!

Isn't it interesting that some folks will go to this length for a little piece of land, while others couldn't care less where their property line is? How can that be?
I guess I am curious if any one else has had this sort of thing happen where they surveyed for someone only to find out that there were nefariousness happenings afterwards or during?
I brushed my common line with a neighbor down in Anchor Point. He was fine with that and so was I. When he sold his lot, the surveyor he hired ran the line right down the middle of the brushed line, so I figger that was good enuff!

Some of the most heated property line disputes that I have seen didn't start as property disputes. Anger over someone supposedly doing something wrong to the other, kin arguing over an inheritance, etc. Disputes between kinfolks can be the absolute worst. I've spent hours drafting and redrafting property splits because someone ws afraid that their sibling or cousin would get the "better" piece of property. Then when an "agreement" is reached and pins are set NO THAT ISN'T WHAT I AGREED TO!!! I've told folks that it would be better to sell the place and split the money. Dollars can be split equitably, sometimes land can't.

There was a fellow in northern Cherokee County (gone now) that was infamous for moving Land Lot corners. I've found the holes where he pulled up a two inch pipe and moved it +/- 50 feet to suit him better. I always hated surveying anything adjoining any of his properties.

It's never about the property. It's always about something else.
On January 3, our brand new Sheriff (third day on the job) had a triple shooting to deal with. It was over ownership of a 6 acre tract I had surveyed a few years ago. The victims survived, but the shooter took his own life when approached by law enforcement. This is the story. We were hired to survey off 6 acres because the owners (husband and wife) were in a financial bind. The woman's father bought the tract to help them out. Later, the father was about to go bankrupt and deeded the tract to his grand daughter to keep it out of bankruptcy. When the bankruptcy was over, he wanted the grand daughter to deed it back to him so he could sell it. His daughter, son in law and grand daughter didn't want anyone buying it since it was directly behind their house so they wouldn't deed it back to him.... They all seemed like good folks.
Some of the land disputes in the "Third World" are terminal too.

yes!
Stacy, so the man shot his daughter, son in law and grand daughter? That's just crazy.
