Hello everyone.?ÿ This is my first post so I hope this is in the right place.?ÿ We have Sokkia GR2 units with Topcon FC500 data collectors.?ÿ we are currently using Verizon mifi's to connect to state VRS networks.?ÿ The problem is they continually disconnect and lose radio.?ÿ But our old units with the internal sim cards work 100 times better.?ÿ Are there any special parameters for the mifi??ÿ I can't believe they are all this bad or they wouldn't even be able to sell these!?ÿ The company we purchased it from said that we would have to contact Verizon.?ÿ Its almost impossible to track down anyone from Verizon that even understands what equipment I am talking about.?ÿ Do any of you guys have suggestions???ÿ
?ÿ
Side Note:?ÿ We purchased 2 units at the same time, each from a different vendor, and they are almost unusable with Network VRS, but they both work great when set up with a base.
We use Verizon MiFi??s for our Trimble R10 units. I sometimes have coverage issues, in remote areas. But my crews typically don??t have an issue in a normal day.
I had a similar issue Several years ago. I just called Verizon and told them I needed it to work. 🙂 (They have no idea what we are doing) If you talk to the Verizon tech support, let them know it is small packets of data every secound, all day long over the internet. ?ÿ
Also, you may want to try to use your cell phone to hot spot and see if it still drops. For some reason my phone never has an issue when my mifi did.
Hope this helps.?ÿ
Neil
Thanks Neil.?ÿ I'll have to give that a try and see if it helps.

We run 2 Topcon FC-5000s DCs with a Hiper SR RTK Rover and a GT 505 TS. We also use a Verizon MiFi for internet connection.?ÿ
We had a lot of issues trying to get the DCs to connect to the MiFi at first. Had long conversations with both Topcon and Verizon, but could not get the issue resolved. Also our issue was only the initial connection, after it was connected it would work great. After a long and frustrating process we finally got the newest version of the Verizon Jetpack that seemed to help things for the most part. Occasionally it will still have trouble connecting and I have to turn the DC on airplane mode for 30 secs and then it seems to connect very easily after.
PS: We traded in our FC-500 after having quite a few issues, one of which was a loss of data.
You might try taking the password off.?ÿ If that fixes it go back into the settings and set the max number of connections to 1 that way no one else can hop on and steal your data.
The password thing was an issue for some of my Leica gear.?ÿ One controller needed the?ÿJetpack's WiFi?ÿto be open while a newer one needed it to be password protected.
Good luck!?ÿ
You are describing what our Verizon MiFi was doing a couple of months ago.?ÿ Designed obsolescence was our issue as a new one fixed it.?ÿ
I really appreciate all the help on here guys!?ÿ I've spent a few hours on the phone today with Verizon and they had no answers for me.?ÿ Its frustrating to see the old units out performing the new ones, and neither manufacturer can tell us whats wrong, but I have a few ideas to try now.
We have the same issues. Restarting or the airplane mode mentioned above has worked. We have also noticed that with the newer tablets (FC5000's) that the band in the jetpack need to be set on 5 GHz. If were are using our carlson surveyor 2's or rangers the band has to set to 2.4 GHz.
Take the SIM card out of the MiFi and put it in the FC5000. It will work much better.
I have that same problem, and posted on it.
Starting and stopping didn't help. My "phone" is a built in modem, so I can't reset it or stick it in airplane mode.
What I did learn in several hours today is that Verizon will obsolete 3G by the end of 2019, but I wonder if they're not jumping the gun. Or miscalculated on what the effect their upgrade will have.
Verizon Just Made 3G and Many 4G LTE Phones Obsolete
Why are we caught flat-footed on this though?
Calling Leica tomorrow.
Another possibility: Beta testing.
But we won't actually know that, since "Verizon is in a cutthroat competition with AT&T to be the first carrier to offer 5G. While you may think Verizon already claimed that title, it actually launched a pre-standard 5G network that AT&T (and others) claim is not ??real 5G.?
What they're doing seems to be a jealously guarded secret that they won't share with anyone.

I hope this post helps you guys save time and aggravation.
It seems as if my CDMA modem is on the path to obsolescence. That, unfortunately, is the only network around here with any coverage. The big carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile don't do that.
That condenses down into the conclusion that we will be held hostage (as we are in lots of other areas) by updates and upgrades and obsolescences we have no control over but must pay for. These even, as is the case with our technology, dovetail into each other compounding the problem by becoming obsolete at different times.
My solution, after about 10 hours of being on the phone with Verizon: Pick up a cheap MIFI puck on a low cost data plan, keep that in your shirt pocket and consider it a low-cost throw-away.
Wi-fi protocols are basic and won't likely change as much so the final leg will work for some time.
Keep on keeping on.

I just heard a news report that said the centurylink outage today is also affecting other services including Verizon Mobile Data. Not sure that this applies to the OP since it is dated 12-26.
We have several Verizon jetpacks, everyone different (Verizon never seems to send the same one twice). Anyway, one of them will not allow network access unless it has 4gLTE coverage. The rest of the units allow access in 3g & 1x, right down until there are no bars left. a real PITA, often have to use the phones HotSpot instead.
Verizon is switching over to 5G, and they are no longer supporting 3G. They say that they are allowing connections until the end of 2019, but I don't believe it.
