Trimble S5 locking onto road signs while using active prism?

I'm relatively new to the Trimble S series robots so I may not understand exactly how an active prism works (MT1000). It was my understanding that the instrument would only lock onto the active prism when it could see the diodes, but I've had it lock onto road signs when the prism was nowhere near the sign. I've seen it lock onto the reflection in a window, but that makes sense because the diodes are also reflected in the window. It doesn't help that the duplicate shot notification feature is broken in Survey Pro for the Ranger 3 (verified by Spectra support). Could I be doing something wrong or is this just something you have to work around?

Im sure you did but ill throw a couple things out there.

Check the prism type make sure its the correct prism, Ive seen before where I had the correct prism and then noticed it not tracking me well and of course grabbing reflector type objects. Went into prisms to find that the prism type changed to custom.

see if your in active mode and have correct channels.

I had a problem like that too, but it would also grab license plates and even my darn safety vest. Played around a bit and noticed that I didnƒ??t have my prism set. Got to set the prism ID with the correct type of prism. I havenƒ??t had a problem since

I'm new to my S5 as well. But I'd guess that you are using your multitrack prism in passive mode. If you are not hearing the Trimble Girl voice saying "Target ID (number) Found" when it locks on, then that's the case.?ÿ?ÿ

@reeeshar

Yep, that was the problem. I forgot to re set the ID # of the prism when I flashed newer firmware to my Ranger 3. This should make my next road topo a little more enjoyable. Thank you

@mark-mayer

He's using survey pro.... no trimble girl.

Do you need to set up a new prism style in access to use the mt1000 passively? I dont believe the mt1000 will connect at all if the gun is looking for a channel and doesnt find one, such as if the mt1000 is turned off. I'm not 100% on that.

Could be a setting but....regardless of what the Trimble Rep says, the S Series instruments can and will lock on to other reflective items....the tracker has been known to pull to the reflective item as well without losing lock but losing accuracy. It's a robot. They all do it.?ÿ

I'm a fairly new user to an S5, about 1 year, and if I'm shooting the active prism I've never had it lock on anything else.?ÿ If set to passive, yes it will lock on all sorts of reflective items.?ÿ Its pretty neat to see it lock on the license plate of a car and follow it a few hundred feet down the road.

In the passive prism mode my S6 will lock onto just about anything reflective, including falling snowflakes!?ÿ
