Can someone enlighten me as to whether Trimble Access V 3.21.405 will work with a newer?ÿ model Sokkia total station??ÿ I am in need of a TS with a very narrow reflectorless beam and have had good luck with the Sokkia SET series in the past which worked well with Trimble Survey Controller. Also if anyone has suggestions on another brand TS with narrow reflectorless beam that Access will run I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Ummm... Trimble?
v3.21.405 refers to the operating system version, not the Access version. Access versions are prefaced by the year, i.e. 2017.00, 2018.11...
I could have sworn that Trimble used to list every compatible TS with older versions of Access. These days I don't think there is a comprehensive list.
I suggest going into Survey Styles and setting up a conventional survey style, then seeing what options are available in the dropdown for Sokkia stations.
Your dealer ought to be able to tell you if it's not clear from the controller.
I really resisted swinging at that one. I don't think that even classified as a softball. More like a tee-ball, without the opposing team in the field...
Maybe trade your Trimble DC in, and get the TS you want with a compatible DC.
Or get the dealer to set up the new TS with your current DC, if possible.?ÿ I'd think that it'd be compatible with anything newer, just not older instruments, probably.
You haven't used any models produced in the last 3-5 years, I take it?
Going back to ~10 years or so there were several options for EDMs depending upon the type of work being done. It did require reading the spec sheets to know the capabilities. I still have yet to use a Trimble (or Leica for that matter) TS that did not live up to its datasheet specs.

I would have to say that I think the reflectorless is by far the weakest part of the S6 and S8 total stations I use.
While it may meet published specs, in the field it is prone to error.
It seems the beam width is so wide that you don't get a distance to what you are pointed at - you get the nearest thing in the field of view (and that's even with the guide laser turned on).
Trying to shoot past vegetation, or through fences is not good...

You can run a SOKKIA TS with Carlson SurveCE. I think Carlson Surveyor Plus data collector is very affordable these days as newer models came in or any other decent model (I run one of these as well). Survece.com says which TS model supports which version of SurveCE / data colector. Sorry, I have no idea about Access. I have used few SOOKIA models and one thing noticed the reflectorness is fast and accurate. When I measure through other objects I check the reflectorless reading with a prism or reflective sheet. compares well. The current TS ix1003 reflectorless measurments are very fast. The dealer said it's the best. Haven't compared with other brands.?ÿ
@jimcox interesting comments. I don't use and S6 or S8 but I've been considering a purchase.
If you're using reflectorless I take it you're not using the prisms, correct?
If one uses prisms with the S6 and S8 will that improve things (eliminate the misclosure)? Or am I missing something here?
I work to an MT1000 or mini-prism most of the time.
Reflectorless to pick-up buildings, eaves and other remote points.
For walls get three points, so you can work out which one is wrong...
The S6 is a great machine (especially with the 'vision' option), but it is not perfect
You can run any make of conventional ts with Access, you just have to set the survey style up correctly.?ÿ Robotics is a different story.?ÿ If you need help getting your style set up, dm me and I can help you.
Below are pics of Sokkia options you have for Trimble Access 2017, doesn't look like it's changed since Survey Controller v12.45 which I used to run. Sokkia still only runs the SET instruments. Consider maybe a Leica, although they are notorious for re-inventing the wheel regularly so the drivers may not be compatible.
