I was carrying some files to the attic and found a pair of HP 3800 distance meters in cases. And a bunch of other neat toys that we don't use anymore. I bet I could put together a heckuva display box.

Andy

I thought this was going to be about the album of the same name by Aerosmith.

My dad tells me, and I don't know how true it is, that you can take a 3800 and shoot a distance to the headlight of an oncoming train and it will return a distance, right before it burns something out in it.

Would it be worth it to try it????

🙂

Andy

IT IS TRUE!!!

The only catch is that in order for the beam to bounce back to the distance meter corectly, since it is bouncing off of a glass and not a prism, is the you have to be precisely between the rails for it to work.

Maybe NOT worth trying.

LOL

Andy,

I would love to have one of those for my display.

I passed up on having one "fall into" my truck 10 years ago for some stupid reason and this one even worked.

I have a transit and vara chain and then a Red 1, but that would fit nicely in the middle.

Let me how much it would cost me to have it "fall into" my truck.

I need a reason to go and see my cousin Greg Shoults in Midland anyway.

lol

Randy

Well, let me see what we are going to do with them. We have been cleaning out the storage.

Those were fun to lug up and down the Missouri hills...

I remember one fine morning as a young rodman...my party chief said..."today you have it easy...all you have to do is carry that HP 3800 for Charley and give backsights..."

Ten hours later...."easy day...yeah right."

They do look good on display!

I have a Red One also, although it doesn't work anymore.
