Is the Topcon IS (Image Station) worth getting? I am in the market to get a robotic total station, and I came across the IS and thought it had some pretty neat features. I'll be running Magnet software and intend to use the hybrid positioning. Does anyone have any thoughts about its abilities? My plan is to use it to do topo, staking, above ground pipeline installation/plant as-builts, and boundary jobs.
What extra software is required other than Magnet Office?
Have you had any issues with Magnet or the IS?
I tried the IS but it kept losing lock on my targets In the end I bought the Sokkia SX
Magnet is a powerful tool if you know how to use it well. Lee from the forums is very knowledgeable in this aspect.
I'm looking for a used 3" robot. Somewhere in the 10-15k range. I really like the idea of the hybrid positioning. Which seemed to really work great on a demo of the new (too expensive) topcon gt robot. Can Carlson do it as seamlessly as magnet can?
Is the SX the PS with a different paint job?

From my understanding from my dealer. The SX is an improvement of the IS. Robots turns faster(looks nice but doesnt not affect much) and locks better(this is more impt in my opinion).
Hybrid Positioning, I have not tried it yet as for my SX I have to put a RC unit on top of my prism and this is what makes the station tracks the prism better.
I have not tried Carlson in the DC yet. Only use Carlson Survey in office
Will the IS still be supported and parts replaceable in a couple of years time? I think that could be an issue as this instrument design is about 10 years old as far as I know. I trialed it once and felt the camera feature added very little for the extra price at the time.
Well, I went with the Topcon GT. It will be here Friday. Can't wait to play with my new machine!

Arctan,
Wow, you went all out. A giant leap forward from the IS to a GT. I demo'd the GT a few weeks ago. The GT has a lot of weird R2-D2 type noises it is ultra sonic. It is extremely fast and light for a robot, and way more $$ that you stated above. The new Hiper HR is awesome also. What GPS are you going to use for the HyBrid solution? What controller are you using?
Well I pulled some strings and I'm selling some other equipment to help with the cost. I'm going to use our Hiper V for the hybrid solution. I'm using a mobile demand t7200 tablet with magnet field for the data collector. The additional cost of the HR didn't make sense to use since we already have units that will do the hybrid positioning.
I've got a job I'm going to test it on that I've already completed and I'm pretty excited to see how it compares to my existing survey.

Let us know how good it is. We might purchase one next year.
