Yep, The Dunes. He was too big to get in the image without going off center.
I was playing round at a course in Tampa with a couple of other surveyors. We came across about an 8 footer just lying in the rough catching some rays. My ball was about 5 feet away from the business end of this gator. This gator appeared to have no interest in my ball or us. My fellow golfers were nice enough to let me take a drop in the fairway...
One of the course rangers told us later that he "occupied" one of the larger ponds adjacent to the 7th fairway and he had never caused anyone any problems.
This course is one of the best places to see big gators on the island. Used to have 14-16 footers there. But they've moved most of those man eaters.

Back in the 70s, our Jamaica Rd. home on Marco Island provided front row seats for more than a few dog eatings. The Island Country Club lakes harbored a few resident monsters.

a few years ago, after a few people were killed by gators, the island decided that their "gator sanctuary" hands off policy might not be the best for the growing tourism...

haha! ok, busted there, it had more to do with the tiny window of opportunity to hold my iphone up to the scope, get the image to focus and hit the button... and I tend to have natural shake, so that didn't help matters. too much coffee. 😉
