One of my latest monument recovery attempts in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The thief might have been Rocky Raccoon?
Thank you for your efforts in documenting this. It is inspiring. I take my family out occasionally to go hunt for survey treasure. It's fun. But you take it to a new level.
I'm curious if NGS would be likely to invest anything today to restoring this monument to its original position?
Also, what does a thief do with this monument? Sell it on eBay? What a shame!
Great pictures!
I spent several years doing resurveys in South Dakota, but never made it up to the top of Scruton Mountain.
I have many survey monuments in the township that Custer is in.

It looks like Jeffy of "The Family Circus" plotted that hiking path.
🙂 😉
Could the mark and reference marks have been taken during the decommission of the old watch tower?
Going down in a straight line is easier than going up (except in the Grand Canyon, both ways are hard).
Beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing.
Very interesting.

Brass is the new copper. (Around here anyways)
I did a Parish (county) wide benchmark project back in the middle 1980's. When I gave a presentation to the politicians in charge, I mentioned that I'd be setting Witness Posts at each BM. I was admonished not to set Witness Posts and instead to hide the marks whenever possible in order to avoid the expected vandals.
Keep up the good work J. Penry
