My rural area in getting the rural high speed internet install…. It’s a long process so I won’t comment on all of it, but… last Wednesday-Thursday the one-call folks were out dutifully marking away for the work to resume on Monday ( yesterday). On Friday afternoon, the local blade hand that a group of folks had hired, came out and for most of Friday and Saturday- bladed out the potholes and all the marks….

Not everyone - there are still a few of us that do not believe in supporting Mr Musk and his proliferation of space junk

I get it. Looking at the sky chart it's way more than I realized. That network is crazy.

However, remote sites here are often on Starlink. I was just chatting with an engineer/surveyor about a common job and it wasn't until he was about to go that he told me he was at his cabin. No cables, no cell service, no electricity, the place is solar panels, Starlink. He loves it. I don't see any issues, he's sending emails, phone is clear. People here are really on board out in the big country. The cable shows up and meep, they couldn't care less.

@mightymoe Starlink costs more upfront and monthly for lower bandwidth and higher latency and is overall less reliable. But for a remote location with no alternatives, it's the bees-knees. It's around $600 up front for equipment and monthly $120. Most local fiber networks charge around $80 a month. An aside, the entire 4 & 5G cellular system runs off fiber networks tying towers together. Utilities love fiber because they don't have nearly the maintenance costs they had with copper which is much more susceptible to corrosion. Glass is basically inert.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

@williwaw

We just purchased Starlink for the office trucks. I believe it was $249 for the unit, $39 per month for the service (discount price). This is the mini that goes on the roof of the truck and allows us to connect to the office in cell dead areas. We just got it this week and are weathered in until at least next week. I'll have a review of it coming up. I've got a dead area I'm working in that stops connecting to cell 20 miles before the turn off to the site that's another ten miles down a county road. The really good thing for us would be if Starlink could be the cell service for RTK, but that will depend on the Star phone, if that really shows up it would be a game changer. As far as costs, I would love to pay $120 a month for home service, but alas I'm not in charge there, if SWMBO wants to continue paying for it I have to defer.

I do get it, fiber is the fast service, if you're a gamer or watch lots of streaming, then it's the best thing to have.

I live 8 air miles from the county courthouse and only had access to Verizon dsl which was so slow, our program licenses would not even acknowledge being connected. I had to have stand alone licenses/ dongles to run TBC etc, and work off my local drive until I could get to town and store back on to the network. Starlink has been an obsolete game changer-  ( I was on the waiting list for about 6 months).

I won’t be hooking up to the new fiber.

When we built our home in VA in 2016-2017 our only option was Hughes Net satellite internet. It was OK for most stuff but the latency was so bad that the Land records in MARYLAND would kick back a redirect and I could never connect. During that time our electric co-op was building out a fiber network and 2 years later we were able to get fiber to the house for $80/month. Wow what a difference.

Wife and I were leaving Eads, Colorado about ten years ago headed due east for what seemed to be forever.  Somewhere in there we lost cell coverage on the one main highway that exists in that area for 100 miles and finally started to have one bar on/off/on/off/on/off.  No mountains, no trees, no huge power lines, nothing that could interfere with a signal.  The kind of country where you cab watch a pup run away from home for the first three days.
