She thinks my office looks like a hoarder.?ÿ I told her I know where things are and what they are.

She asked my crew if they wanted to vote on how clean my office was- I told her (and them)?ÿthere was only one vote in this office trailer that mattered.

She thinks I need to delegate my office cleaning and filing to someone on my crew- un huh.

She said "We don't have to live like this"- I asked when was the last time anyone threw her in a snow bank and rubbed her face in the snow.

she left...

Yea! Don't mess with my office! There's an order to the mess! If it's not a box score my people don't remember anything.

Was she headed to HR? Don't you work for the Government? If you were hit by a bus tomorrow; would your replacement be able to take over?

don't get me wrong, I agree with you; no one , that isn't your boss, should tell you how to organize your work-space. And if your boss does say anything, it should be constructive suggestions; not micro-management.

If I got hit by a bus tomorrow my replacement could throw everything in my office into the dumpster as long as he/she had my computers.

At a surveying company I used to work for, my boss's office was what many consider "less than neat and organized". The owner of the company saw fit to comment about it from time to time...... until one day the owner sent a secretary in to "clean and organize" while my boss was not there.

Well, when my boss arrived, there was allot of cussing and yelling that promptly started. When things heated up from there, the other office person suggested that he and I "go outside for a smoke", which I thought was a great idea.

We gave "things" some time before being brave enough to venture back inside.

Radar-

If the proverbial bus showed up tomorrow- whoever came into the office would find several piles on a drafting table, a folding table and my desk- each having a sticky note with a project number written on it- everything in the pile ( several folders labeled Control No. #### and the pertinent phase of the project- Control or cadastral- beside nearly every pile is a roll of COS/Plans/etc. with the project number written on the outside?ÿ) would be related to the project. But the most valuable component- what's in my head- would be gone.

My guys are pretty much up to speed on the projects they are working on, but have very little knowledge of the stuff I'm working on. There is only so much you can pass on in a dynamic environment.

Aren't indoor fires typically frowned upon by "the powers that be"? Or are we talking about throwing paper and such out the window and doing a parking lot fire? ??ÿ

I once worked a year at a consultancy in England, and there I met a fellow NZ'er who'd been already ensconced in the company for a year or two. In the time that I worked there the appalling layout of his office never changed, down to the molecular level. I deduced that at some point he'd set up the position of the files and papers by standing as far away as possible, closing his eyes and hurling piles of the stuff at his desk and shelves, leaving them as and where they lodged and thereafter only using his computer.

Here is my cubicle. The sign at the entrance says it all.

?ÿIn my opinion, my desk is MY business. PERIOD.

The closest thing to an IT person around here is Mrs. Cow as she works with a variety of computers and related software at her school.

?ÿ

As far as HR, I is him.

What??ÿ Most of my career I spent my time trying to get *everybody* to write it in the paper job record, later when computers showed up to make sure it was stored, backed up and accurate.

Next time you visit your dentist note how meticulous his records are concerning your mouth; a wall of folders admissible in court.

The cube guy with a ton of personal papers with post-it notes is a time bomb, he dies, goes rogue or?ÿ even if he stays becomes so senile his "secret squirrel" stuff can't ever be unraveled.?ÿ Best to either rehabilitate him/her early on, or soon shitcan him/her for somebody that can do the job and keep accurate records.?ÿ Ya, he/she solves major problems under pressure but years later it's not so simple what exactly what happened.

Seen it happen several times, a long time big guy bails, a forensic crew tries to reassemble what he did, realizes his network computer records are lame and his paper records are so convoluted they just throw them in the dumpster.?ÿ You're stuck with no clue except what made it into the public record over the years, sad to be inside the business and know how poorly records are kept.

?ÿ
