The mess of an office is an easy fix once there is enough time to organize.

Solo operation does not always allow for constant neatness.

Neither does having 5 times the amount of stuff that will fit in your work space.

What troubles me about your cubicle are the many chemical containers and paint cans and other potential hazardous materials that appear to be everywhere mixed in with normal office supplies.

? [/SNIP]

Even though the chemical containers, paint cans, etc. are randomly or quasi-randomly placed, I do have enough chemical knowledge such that any two or more items that could be potentially reactive are stored far apart.

Some folks organize vertically, others horizontally; I'm in the latter category (maybe "store items" would be a better term versus organize). I also like everything within reach 🙂

Yeah, I probably should go through my stuff when I have some time... this was actually taken about a year or so ago. But it looks similar today, just some different papers in some other piles.

Since the carpets are being cleaned this weekend, it might be a good time to do so...

?ÿ

Oh, one other thing: when/if I get my license which may be in just a few weeks, I have ZERO doubt it will FORCE me to adopt a better means of organizing!!

What??ÿ Most of my career I spent my time trying to get *everybody* to write it in the paper job record, later when computers showed up to make sure it was stored, backed up and accurate.

Next time you visit your dentist note how meticulous his records are concerning your mouth; a wall of folders admissible in court.

The cube guy with a ton of personal papers with post-it notes is a time bomb, he dies, goes rogue or?ÿ even if he stays becomes so senile his "secret squirrel" stuff can't ever be unraveled.?ÿ Best to either rehabilitate him/her early on, or soon shitcan him/her for somebody that can do the job and keep accurate records.?ÿ Ya, he/she solves major problems under pressure but years later it's not so simple what exactly what happened.

Seen it happen several times, a long time big guy bails, a forensic crew tries to reassemble what he did, realizes his network computer records are lame and his paper records are so convoluted they just throw them in the dumpster.?ÿ You're stuck with no clue except what made it into the public record over the years, sad to be inside the business and know how poorly records are kept.

?ÿ

Excellent post.

Sounds like she wants to be a life coach instead of an IT person

We've been trying to clean-up around here, part of it is going paperless, so far so good but a long ways to go.

The young women who was scanning for us was way over qualified and is buying out her other employer now, so it's back to us doing it,?ÿshe was only very part time but she sure did keep up with all of it. It's piling up back in the record room.

It's?ÿsimple, you have a client name, location or job# and you can click on the link and see the job folders, maps, ect.

I can't imagine seriously hassling a grown man about how clean his office is, let alone trying to rally his coworkers against him for that reason.

Hmm, marriage and several secretaries have taught me otherwise.

An IT person who thinks I need to clean my desk??ÿ I can just carry my computer to her next time.?ÿ And if she thinks she can get the office to vote to make me do something I don't want to do, I got news for her, my office ain't a democracy.?ÿ There is crap in here I don't need.?ÿ But there is crap in here I would feel wasteful throwing away too.?ÿ As for someone coming behind me and trying to decipher my stuff, I don't see that as much of my problem.?ÿ If I leave on friendly terms, I'll help.?ÿ If I am mad, it's their problem.?ÿ If it was sudden, well, ain't nothing to be done about that, now is there?

A doctrine that I adhere to is that as long as a file is out on my desk the client will not call or bother me. Consequently, I have a drafting table with neat piles and racks of vertical folders with things on hold or pending. When my workload winds down, I put a few folders away and voila, I have more work to do.?ÿ

My partner is the yang to my yin. His desk is spotless except for the post-it note that he carries out his business from.?ÿ?ÿ
