I got a pretty sweet setup at home for personal use.?ÿ I went to a local used business furniture place that also sells a few new things.?ÿ I bought a new shell there for $350 and a used chair that is amazing for $100.?ÿ I wish I had known about these places before, like a lot of you guys I was getting stuff at office max, office depot, etc and the stuff simply doesn't last.
You can't judge a book by it's cover, as the saying goes. There are those that try to hide their shortcomings of ability by overdressing and over-accessorizing.
Nevertheless, if you are trying to carry your argument so far as to say that dressing appropriately and/or having a comfortable, organized, and visually appealing workspace somehow proves incompetence - well, that's not right either. In a world where a smartphone can cost a grand there is nothing wrong with going upscale just a little to get office furniture that will last a long time and still have residual value.
Same with clothes. I'm not expecting you to survey in Gucci's, but a clean pair of jeans and a collared shirt isn't too much to ask.
@norman-oklahoma I assume you're joking with this $5800 desk, no work or storage space and a chair I wouldn't want to sit in longer than a tea with grandma's friends. I wonder what anyone would even use that for. 🙂
@dave-drahn
It's a beautiful piece that will last you for life, and then sell for more than you paid. It's also a one off- made to order. If you need it bigger, order it that way. But, no. I'm not expecting anyone to go that far and pay that much. Although a lot of you will pay that much for a living room suite that will be trash in 10 years.
I would like to see us all to think bigger than getting a piece of throwaway Office Depot crap for furniture.
Just trying to shake of the Office Depot junk jag..... I'm reviewing the local version of craigslist and finding an wealth of non-particleboard & sheet tin options at prices not far above the hauling it away.
@mathteacher Kinda true but not cinder blocks. https://blog.aboutamazon.com/working-at-amazon/how-a-door-became-a-desk-and-a-symbol-of-amazon
My neighbor was a two digit employee who put together dozens of desks.
@holy-cow
I did some survey work for Bob Propst the inventor of the cubicle. He had a very nice family compound over on the east side of Lake Sammamish. Very nice people. I remember his house was filled with the coolest room dividers I've ever seen.
"in a windowless concrete room"
In the past, I've been relegated to that position. It was also 30 degrees C at my desk because there was no aircon and all the folk who had window seats wouldn't open the windows "because it's cold". I complained, pointing out that if this was on site, and a tunnel, there'd be a law against working in those conditions. Got constructively dismissed for my trouble.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having nice things.?ÿ Unless, they are a burden instead of a blessing.?ÿ Having a very sharp appearing office at a prime location is great if the net income from the business is able to support that expenditure while also providing proper wages for all of the help and providing the right tools to them.?ÿ Where things go wrong is when the appearance costs too much compared to the end result.
It also helps to look appropriate relative to your clientele.?ÿ If you are rubbing shoulders daily with workers from other businesses that do millions of dollars in business each year, then it is appropriate to match up fairly well.?ÿ They would tend to view someone rolling up in a 1956 Studebaker pickup with the bed half rusted away as suspect as to their business acumen.?ÿ On the other hand, if you spend most of your time working for home owners who have scrimped for years to have what they have, no matter how fancy or crude, they will not appreciate your outward appearance of getting rich off of people just like them.?ÿ The term "rich bastard showing off" may come to mind.?ÿ Sometimes they use that as an excuse to fail to pay your invoice because you clearly didn't need their money to survive.
The new fad is the dual sitting and standing desk. In our office everyone that wanted one got one?ÿ ?ÿI didn't think I would like it but now i can't live without it, it's great.?ÿ So much more flexibility and mobility all around.?ÿ

Maybe he is a long lost cousin of mine. Too many of my ancestors and too many Propst ancestors lived near to each other in West Virginia in the days when you had to find a wife within walking distance from the milk barn.

I remember finding out ?ÿthat the president had place settings that cost more than the trailer I was livening.

i expressed my concern to my current boss and he put in to perspective. He said: this is the leader of the free nation, he deserves the best...
I Have a manual crank sit-stand desk from Ikea. And a high $ Serta office chair. I try to make myself as comfortable as possible in the place I like being in least.
I even have an exercise ball I sit on occasionally for some core work.
hello all,?ÿ
here is my setup, when i turned 50 it was either a sportscar (which i could not fit it) or a custom built desk, we all spend 50+ hours at the desk, why not make if comfortable
wife wanted a desk. We looked at Office Depot...absolute junk as you say. Wound up spending 3 or 4 thousand for a quality desk (had to order it). It will last forever unlike the particle board/cardboard junk.
