Our IT department has degreed will get new computers. Does anyone know if Topcon Tools, Mission Planning software, PCCDU, and F-loder and other Topcon receiver software will run on a new 64 bit computer. How about commuicating with a new Ranger 3L. Are there any other issues I need to know. I assume C3D 2012 is good.
Thanks in advance
Mike Evans
Qur IT department has decreed we will get new computers. Will Topcon Tools, Mission Planning, PCCDU and other receiver utility softwar run on new 64 bit systems. How about a Ranger 3L collector. Anything else I need To Know.
Thanks In Advance

Sorry about the double post. This idot had his category set to survey only!
Yes, I use all the TOPCON software you mention with 64bit Windows 7. In the early days we had to use Virtual Mode, but now there are 64bit USB drivers available to download from TOPCON.
Not sure about the ranger, and I don't use C3D, but your likely to have no problems.

Lee,
Thanks a lot. I would trust an answer about Topcon GPS from you more than Topcon support. When I tried to ask them about Narrow banding they sent me a list of dealers. After we spent $500 to do our radio we finaly found out it wood be $2500 each to get out hyper + working in RTK again!!
Thanks again
Mike
My Hiper XT's are already narrow band.
i am running CAD 06 in Win 7
it works, but not perfectly
there is an option to run a program in a 32 bit mode or in XP mode
again, not perfect, but it will work
i cannot get a DOS program to work in win 7
i have a bunch of old cogo files (Ed Bischoff's program)
so i need a XP box floating around for those
fortunately the need for these files has lessened.
when is win 8 due? are your IT guys sending you there?
Wow great timing...
I am in need of a new comuter myself to run civil 3d 2012. Should we get a cookie cutter dell, if so which one and what configuration would you like?
Xi compter, custom built? A little pricey but maybe comparable to a dell with the same setup.
Thoughts?
Win 7 I think but am not sure.
WE have had XI for 2 go rounds. We will get Xi this time also. We have has Dells also. You just can't beat Xi for a CAD computer. The only time we had a problem they had it fixed on site pronto.
Mike
I got tools to work but no PCCDU had to get TRU. We got the the solid state hard drives which I would recommend to anyone, they are fast. Most of the software I use was able run windows does some hocus pocus and runs the 32 stuff.
When I first got Win 7 there were no drivers for the HP 1050. Eventually they became available. You should be ok, but you should keep an XP box around just in case. I used to have two computers at the desk with two monitors for each.
It was perfect for when I was processing a massive 8-mile route survey with a few hundred GPS vectors and several dozen fieldbooks. It only took 20 minutes for the old machine to spit out the solution, but it did not bog down the primary machine.
I remember those days...IT driving a bus with no idea what the destination was. Now for the good news, most software will work on win 7 now, dos programs continue to be a problem, cant speak for c3d but carlson seems to work fine.
There is no absolute yes or no answer for some of the software. Tools so far has worked well on 7 64-bit, though most of the time you have to run it as an administrator. PC-CDU works on about 50% of our user's machines. TRU has worked in every case where PC-CDU doesn't. I haven't had much luck with Occupation Planning but I have been pointing folks to Ashtech's online Mission Planning which is fantastic. Windows Mobile Device Center replaces Activesync and has been a better solution in my opinion.
i got PCCDU to work on Win 7
right click the exe
choose compatibility
XP
or download the program again from TopconPositioning
I'm using an Apple Mac Pro that seems to work pretty well, but i'm using trimble stuff and Civil 3D 2011...
If you get Windows 7 Professional (not Home Premium) and you can't run software in 64-bit OS, you can download/install the Microsoft XP Virtual application (free) which installs a virtual XP computer on your desktop. Or, if you have extra copies of XP lying around and want to use Win 7 Home Premium, you can install a free virtual computer from VMWare.com (the VMWare Player), then install XP into that. They both work well, but the Microsoft application seems to be a little faster to boot up. Win 7 Professional will run you about $90/computer more than Home Premium.
We got everything to work in Win 7 (64 bit) with no XP encabulator (had it for a while but got rid of it).
Autocad 2010, LD 2000, old accounting software, Trimble not Topcon, and all the old stuff; printers, plotters, dymo, ect. Even the old timesheet program was working and it was DOS based from 1986.
I can say the older software works way better than it ever has. But it had nothing to do with me; we just hired a really good guy. You need a really good guy.
Mark, did you ever get survey 4.0 working in Win 7? or Generic Cadd?
I run a dual boot on my laptop for work, Win 7 for some stuff (not much) and then have win xp pro for my survey progs (Survey 4 and Generic Cadd)...not the most convienent setup but serves my purposes...actually use Win xp most of the time but one has to be careful as some comps do not supply drivers for xp...took me about a week to set up XP on this HP notebook...I had to reconfigure the XP install disk in order for it to install.
No, I think the oldest program I have is Autocad 12. As I recall it was the last DOS Autocad. Then 13 came out in Windows-I think. Anyway; the only Dos program I had working in the new computers was the accounting program. After I had Win 7 for a while I got rid of the accounting program and had one written that would merge all the old info in the original DOS program into a new system. I'm only going back to LDD and old printers for the older programs on the new computers. I haven't tried to load up TSO or TRIMMAP on the new computers; but I imagine they would work.
