Here, for example is a 1940-vintage #4 rebar marking a lot corner in a subdivision in Travis County, Texas. The deformations on the bar are spaced at 0.75 inch o.c., which is much wider than the maximum spacing of 0.7 x 0.5 in. = 0.35 inch o.c. permissible for rebars made in the US after 1947 in conformity with the ASTM spec for deformed bars.
Another #4 rebar in the same subdivision after being discovered by the Caterpillar Company.
In that particular case, the subdivision was a large one and the surveyor, an engineer from San Antonio named Frank Drought, apparently bought bundles and bundles of pre-cut bars from a fabricator.
