I know there are some Trimble experts on here so I thought I would ask the question and pose scenarios.?ÿ

We currently run R8's on the VRS network, which is great when we get both Cell Signal and are Close enough to Cors stations to get solutions.?ÿ

The problem is we keep running into situations where we are out of range of either of those items we need for proper VRS Solutions.?ÿ

I am contemplating repurposing the R8's to bases and buying three R12's as the rovers to that setup.?ÿ

Is that possible? Are there any users that currently run this setup or have maybe are using the R12's hook to a base and could give me feedback.

I hear good things about the R12s, but have never used one.

Thank you in advance.

CORs is a seperate issue.

What model of R8 are you using or proposing to use?

Older models have less channels and might not give you GLONASS(which is sometimes a good thing in final processing) and the newer satellites going forward.

Model3 and forward would be a bona fide solution with a good TDL450 radio at base and collect static data in cases where you lose signal.

Also use repeaters.?ÿ

?ÿ

Anymore and I'll have to start charging you some consulting fees.....

It is certainly possible to run an R8 base and R12 rover. But to really leverage the R12, the R8 needs to be observing all constellations.

If not, you'll still have the R12's excellent RTK engine, but it's going to be hampered without access to full GNSS.

I probably wouldn't spring for the R12 if I was going to be restricted to GPS+GLO corrections. We are running?ÿ the R10-2 (same internals as the R12) on the state network, and there is an immediate benefit when switching from the old correction stream (GPS+GLO) to the new MSM mountpoints (full GNSS).

R12ƒ??s ProPoint RTK engine using a R8 (gps+glonass) will still give faster and more accurate positions than a R10 model 1 due to faster CPU and ProPoint firmware. If you have 3 R8 units and want to buy 3 new receivers, youƒ??ll want to pair them as: R12-R12, R12-R8, R8-R8. This way ?ÿ 1 of your crews will have modern RTK abilities instead of 0. Have the R12 crew go to sites with more obstructions.

I would do the same thing. And hope that the crews don't get into fistfights over who gets the R12-R12 package...send them to the toughest jobs, that oughta help.

I have gone from and r8 base w/ r10 rover?ÿ to a r12 base / r12i rover.

The r12 combo will get fixes in 95% of the canopy we work in.

We always have canopy on our sites

Game changer.

You have to have a tsc7 to use the r12i.

The tsc7 is bulky but it is a windows 10 operating system that lets my crew

view pdfs?ÿ

@robertusa

This is good to know, I had assumed an R10 base and R12 rover would be the most efficient setup at the moment.

I don't think the R12 as a base is significantly better than an R10 as a base. The R12 ProPoint is beneficial at the rover end.?ÿ

@jitterboogie

I should have listed my equipment. We have the Trimble R8 Model 3s that are upgradable to use GPS, GNSS and GALILEO.?ÿ

We got a fix on this. Old pipe 1' deep set in 1946

The pic is a traditional total station check/confirmation shot?ÿ

The rod height was about the same for?ÿthe GPS shot?ÿ

it was confirmed to be?ÿwithin 0.09 '?ÿ

They should run an Ad campaign "..... Trimble R12i - made in the shade....."

r12ifix
r12fix2
r12ifix3

I disagree about the pairing, as long as the base is tracking GLONASS and Galileo you should see the same performance at the rover. I've had the opportunity to test drive the R12i and it's absolutely game changing, truly unbelievable performance. I would buy the three R12i and then do some testing with an R8 base vs. R12 base and see if there's any drop off, but I don't think there will be. I tested the R12i using an R10 base (original R10, not the R10-2) and it worked as expected.

As to the collector, the TSC7 is absolutely fantastic, the performance and screen size far outweigh the perceived bulkiness. But if I'm not mistaken Trimble just released a TSC5 with a 5" screen to give you the option of a smaller unit. Personally, I love the larger screen and wouldn't want to go back to a smaller one.

The T10 and T7 tablets are also options; any Windows 10 hardware running the current version of Access will work with the R12i.

I'm not even going to describe some of the tests I did with the R12i; if you've never seen it in action you wouldn't believe me.
