A month ago I got a request for a copy of a plan I did 10 years ago. I gave the client a mylar and 4 paper copies in 2005. He never recorded it, and must've lost all the prints, and now apparently has someone else doing work for him, and they want a copy of the plan.

I don't work for myself any more, and also don't have any copies of the plan. This company recently left a voice-mail telling me where to mail it. I called back and wanted to talk to the LS to discuss what I could provide him, since I don't have copies, or a way to produce a 2005 stamped copy. The pushy Bi### office manager wouldn't let me talk, and just demanded that I send them a copy. I told her to have the LS call me, but I'm left with a pretty pissed off feeling, and thinking now that I have no interest in giving them anything. What are my responsibilities anyway in this? I was intending to send them a CAD file and explain what I did, etc. But now, maybe nothing.

Offer to update it at full price. Other than that you're done, you completed your contract 10 years ago. No responsibilities at this point.

In my opinion, given their attitude, this is all you need to tell them.

Ten years on you are not obliged to supply a copy to anyone, unless you want to. You would be ethically obliged to discuss the survey and your findings with another LS if called. But not to supply a copy of your map. Most of the time guys claim that they lost everything in a hard drive crash at some point.

Pushy B___ wouldn't let you talk to the LS because the LS isn't there as much as he/she should be, if at all. That's my guess.

So relax.

If you ever end up talking to the LS, let them know that the demands of their office manager left a bad taste in your mouth. Maybe even tell him that if she calls you back and apologizes you will consider helping them out. You provided your product already. The company should be made aware that an office manager like this will hurt their business.
